Now I must buy one.

This lens is magical - I rented it to shoot a buddies band. I am sorting the pictures out, and the ones I took with the 24-105L dont compare when used with my 5dMk II - something that just really POPS about the 35L (even 35 to 35mm comparisons)....

Wow....

My pocket book will be crying soon.

Anyone else experience this magic when using the 35L with the 5dMkII for the first time?

This is surely my next lens,I want rid of my 24-105 as I don't use it except at 24mm, I grab my Sigma 50 over it for most things.

Doing that though will make the 35mm my widest lens, which in turn means I need a 16-35mm...:D

Not so much "magic" as it is the DOF difference. That so-called "3D" look doesn't happen at f4.

If you think the 35 is magic, you should try the 24 II!

Ill have to post some pics,

I was shooting at the same F/Stop for the most part. I need the whole band in the photo in focus so I could not use razor sharp DOF, I was exposing for the background and filling with flash also.

The colors, the pop of the 35L is crazy.

I am still editing but Ill post up comparisons if I have time.

I shoot ALOT of entertainment and bands, in low light. I have always stated that f2.8 is the minimum you need for that type of work. f4 doesn't cut it.

But I rarely use a wide angle, even close up in the pit. The 35mm L is a great lens, just not for concert stuff.

If you want to see "magic" in low light, try renting a 300mm IS f2.8.

I use 4 lenses when shooting at a medium or large venue;

50mm L f1.2 for full band / full stage shots.
70-200mm L IS f2.8 for up close in the pit
300mm and 400mm IS f2.8 from the balcony or soundboard area

Shooting from the pit, you are always "looking up" at the performers. Much better angle from farther back, but you need reach.

shooting HD 1080p with a Canon 5D mkII using a 400mm f2.8 is amazing. Be sure to turn off IS when using tripod. I shoot 1/30 sec @ f8, ISO 1600 -- and even in dark lighting on stage, everything is bright with deep DOF at f8.

The 35L is just one of those lenses that really works on the 5D2. It should be the default kit lens, in my opinion.

Love my 35L on my 5D2. That said, I have my eyes set on a 135L next. :)

^^ what he said. I was going to get the 35L after renting it but then I rented the 24L and goddamn that lens is amazing. It has such unique subtle distortion that just makes every picture.

When I say shooting bands, I meant in bar/club environments. I dont have the the space for my 120-300 2.8 OS (although I have used it before for low light indoors and it rocks).

It is now my favorite walk around lens for my 5D2.

Your absolutely correct!!

I find the 24Lmk2 to have a totally different look even though its not a massive difference in FL to a 35L.

The 35L on the 5dmk2 looks very NORMAL. I feel that I use it for days I want normal perspective. The 24L has something unique since the perspective is totally different to the 35L focal length.

Here's a 24Lmk2. I cant get this kind of look on my 35L.
