Surely by now you have seen or heard of the guy that rented the 800mm lens and it was accidently dropped overboard from a boat. It was all over the net.

Personal experience - I bought a 2 month old 24-70. About two hours later, while preparing to shoot a high school basketball game, an errant ball hit my camera and knocked it out of my hand onto the hardwood floor, lens first! I had to send it to Canon for repairs. Insurance deductible wasn't worth the hassle so I paid out of pocket for the repair. :-(
