Okay, I'm looking at buying a 24 TSEII. New ones are $2,069 at Adorama.
There is a used one, looks like in good shape at FM for $1775. It's a UY lens
so pretty new.

The new one, will be under warranty obviously and if I buy it through Amazon I have 30 days to use it and return it. $294 difference in price...... 14%

Just curious what you guys feel about how much difference there has to be between new and used on a high dollar lens like that to make you go for the used one.

bannedPermanent ban

30 days to rent and try it out risk free is enough for me. But then again, buying it used and selling it in a year for little, if any loss is cool too.

Seems like a pretty substantial discount so go for used. If you're dead set on getting this lens then get it used. If you're on the fence about getting it, order it from Adorama and give it a good test run.

Lenses are pretty fragile, unless you know the seller I'd go with new. IMHO $300 doesn't make any difference in my life, and it sure isn't worth having any hassle or stress over.

New lenses have the luxury of testing and returning. Any issues you have 1yr warranty for canon.

If a used lens is out of cal (find out after you pay the seller) in most cases your stuck with the cost of calibration. That alone engulfs the "savings" you thought you got buying used.

For me 14% less the used price is not worth it. As others have said for 14% more you get a 30 day refund period and a 12 month warranty.

If the price difference was something like 25% or greater the used one could be a good deal.

Good luck either way :)

Nice lens, I love mine. 14% discount isn't enough for me to buy used.

If it doesn't have visible marring, it's probably not broken.

I always buy new as well. Even though I sell quite a few things and know they are well cared for, you don't that you are getting something that was well cared for. I just like knowing the history, having the return policy and the warranty.

Tell that to the fellow who bought the fungus filled lens and posted it a few weeks ago, or the guy who got the lens with bug in it. They had no external marring.

And if there a pictures showing clean glass. I've bought 70 lenses in th past few years to test them, one had an issue. It wouldn't stop down past 11. Not readily apparent on a lens that's 30+ years old.

I'll consider used if I can save > 20%. I've bought a 24L, Sigma 150/2.8 and a Canon 300/F4IS used. Absolutely no regrets. All lenses looked and performed like new. I do consider the reputation of the seller.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
