Okay, so probably the dumbest question ever but is there a stitch assist mode on the 50D. I always shoot portraits and have not had the need for the option in the past but was wanting to try to take some home interior pics and was hoping to stitch them together.

Any suggestions ... ??? Thanks!

Not in the camera, but there is on the EOS Solutions CD that came with the camera. PhotoStitch!

You mean a mode in the camera where settings are locked so each image to be stitched has identical exposure, right?

The 50D doesn't have that mode, so you have to do it yourself.

That means that once you've got the exposure you want for the initial shot, you switch to manual mode with those settings. You don't want exposure variations between the shots.

So you'll want to use the following settings:

- manual exposure
- preset white balance (not AWB)
- manual focus (maybe)
- fixed ISO (not auto ISO)

Hmmm. Have I forgotten anything?

These settings will make stitching much easier...

A tripod, and if you really want to get serious about Panoramic photography a nice pano head for the tripod.

The stitch assist I have seen on P&S cameras actually has the ability to overlay an offset ghost of the previous image on the live view of the current framing so that you can align the previous image's overlap with the current view, ensuring enough overlap between adjacent images. I doubt any dSLRs have this, but I seem to recall my s90 does.

Yeah, I don't think any Canon DSLRs have this. I think I've heard of it showing up on some other brands, but can't recall any specifics.

I've never used the Canon software myself -- I've used Photoshop for it and been happy with that software (CS3 made some significant strides there).

Which is pretty hopeless compared to CS4 or 5

Thanks guys! I appreciate all of the reccommendations. I'll try again in CS3. I had an ok attempt in CS3 earlier but the exposures were off, I think it had to do with it being set with auto WB.

Thanks again! I'll post a pic for more suggestions if I don't give up on it in the mean time. ;)

Heh! Yeah, it can be really messy if your exposure/WB differ! CS3 definitely does a better job blending than earlier versions, though.

I've only tried PhotoStitch once, otherwise I use CS5 for my Panoramas.
However, since I didn't know what software the OP has, I do know they are using a Canon and that they should have the EOS Solutions CD, so I figure it doesn't hurt to give it a try.
The once I did give it a try it didn't do too bad, but I was careful to make sure my exposures didn't vary and that I had enough overlap.

only thing I'd add, if you have a circular polariser fitted - remove it.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I've actually gotten pretty good results in CS3 without a tripod - although I'd braced myself on a bridge wall to get this shot.

As Numbe 6 mentioned the key is to determine the optimum exposure, place the camera in manual mode, and then fire off your images. This was just 3 shots stitched together with an overlap of probably around 20%. I did use a CPL - it helped for some parts of the image, but made a lot of PP in other areas:
