Hi everybody! First post! I've been lurking around for a bit and cant seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I recently purchased a T1i for a trip to NYC/DC and pretty much got hooked on photography, I've been asked by my boss to take pictures of the buildings that we have completed and the future buildings that we are in the process of completing to build a portfolio for our General Construction company. My camera came with the 18-55mm kit, and the 55-250mm kit. I love taking pictures of architecture/landscape and if I have the opportunity to have the "company" expense me for a lens what would you guys/gals recommend? Wide angle ? Fish Eye? do I need a tripod? So many questions... sorry this "hobby" can be overwhelming. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Welcome to POTN.

Your kid lens will be ok to take the photo of the building; but for 'professional quality' photo, your boss need a pro to do the job.

You can give a go with your kit lens anyway:

Getup a bit earlier, so nobody around the building, and you might feel more comfortable. Take some shoot and post here, and we go from there.

Set ISO to 100, f/10, IS on.

Looking forward to see your photos.

The 18mm side of your kit lens is OK but, IMO, not quite wide enough for most building photography. A 12-24mm Tokina f/4 is a medium priced lens that will really do the job better.

Using a tripod and keeping your digital plane (which is the same as the back of your camera) perpendicular (as far as possible) will avoid perspective distortion as much as possible.

I would definitely advise you to get a copy of Photoshop Elements and learn how to use it, especially when it comes to adjusting perspective in post processing. Avoiding the keystone effect of a building looking like it is leaning back makes images look a lot more proessional.

Imput and output sharpening is also required for good digital imagery...
