I am really considering the switch to the full frame. Why, mainly because I loved the 24-70f2.8 but not that much on the 7D. I really understood why this lens was built for fullframe. So I decided to get the 17-55 f2.8 IS, which is great but I dislike the cheap build quality vs L lens.

I actually got a local deal for a used 5DII(1650$) + 24-70(1200$, not a big deal) for 2850$ but in Canada, the brand new kit with 24-105f4L is on sale for only 2940$ at my door. So i am a bit confused, will I like the 24-105 as much as the 24-70, so I should really go for the brand new one instead of a used one...

Buy the kit, sell the 24-105 and make a profit. Then buy the 24-70mm f/2.8! And yes, IMO the 24-70mm is a better lens coz I like the f/2.8 over the f/4 IS. But starting to get bite by the prime lately, may sell my 24-70 for the 50mm f/1.2 L

Heh! I got the "kit" with my 5D Classic, even though I already had the 24-70, and I love the 24-105 as an all-purpose walkaround lens!

The f/4 (with the IS) is quite suitable for general shooting. But, when facing a lower-light scenario, I'll grab an f/2.8 lens or a prime.

I am considering this too...couple turn offs are all "feature whore" things lol

1. No wireless transmitter(flash)
2. AF lacking
3. no superimposed grid
4. Electronic level(minor)

That's about all I can think of...I would love FF but I know I'd be tempted whenever the MIII came out...decisions decisions.

So you're discounting the 17-55 not because of IQ, but because you don't like the way it feels?

If that's the case, I say skip the 5D2. You should shoot with a 1Ds Mark III instead. It'll "feel" much more solid and professional than the mickey-mouse feel of a 5D2 body.

IQ of 17-55 is superb, I have nothing to say about it. But the build quality of this lens is far away from L lenses. I do not find the 5D2 have a mickey-mouse feel, it is just as good as my 7D.

The point I was trying to make was that ultimately, it's the IQ that matters.

In any case, the 5D2 packages that you've listed seem like reasonable deals. So you can't go wrong with either. And if that fits the bill better, then go for it. Don't forget to swap the Sigma 30/1.4 for something else since the Siggy won't work (well.. it does since Sigma lenses do not stick out at the mount/butt end but you'll get gross vignetting).

24-70 vs. 24-105 is a wash and you'll have to make the choice between carrying a brick (24-70 IMO is retarded heavy especially w/o IS) vs. more versatility with IS.

If you're looking for thinner DoF on your photos (which is often the biggest draw/argument to go FF), then get the f/2.8.

The 17-55 is fine - it's not as heavy because it's an EF-S lens, and since it doesn't require as much glass, I think that the build quality is fine. I've not had any problems with it at all.

I love the 24-105
the flash commander on the 7D didn't live up to what I hoped for.
AF on the 7D is great
IQ on the 5DII is stunning

I sold my 7D, I wasn't shooting sports or BIF.

Go for the kit, try the 24-105 and then decide what to sell.

If it's based soley on Image Quality then he should skip 35mm sensor (So called Full Frame) and go straight to Medium Format. :p Now that's a camera that has a look and feel all to its own! Very professional

cheers,

David

I switched from a 7D to a 5D Mark II and i have to say that I should have kept the 7D. Both cameras are amazing, but both have completely different uses. I say make a profit from the 24-105(:

24-70 > 24-105

Why do you regret going to the 5D?
