We want to see photos of your final prints.

You already saw the print files. What do you expect to see from a copy of a print? It can only look worse than the original file.

Just because you say they look good doesn't mean they do. Photography, like any art form is all relative. Some drugged-out people slap paint on a canvas in a "fit of rage and emotion" and they fetch thousands. Point being, if the client/end user is happy - who cares what other people think.

I still would like to see them, however. Even a camera shot of them. Or how about this - a softproof screenshot from PS?

Well, that's true, but if you don't trust my word, why would you trust an image of the print to be unmanipulated? Or a softproof screenshot. Only the print standing alone on it's own merits would mean anything.

I've said it before, "Clients, what do they know?" But as it happens, it turns out that these are men of finely honed discrimination & extremely good taste! I say that because I delivered the prints that they ordered this weekend & they bought all the proofs, too. Every "lousy" one of them.

I'm still willing to show the (new) prints to anyone who would like to see them. But they'll have to wait for me to have them reprinted later this week. Of course, then they won't be the original prints that I said were looking good, so some wag will say, "These look OK, so they can't be the same as the ones we wanted to see", right? ;)

Personally, I think #1 and #2 are good but the rest don't do it for me.

As an aside, you can't really use the fact of clients buying your prints as proof that they are good, either. There are too many variables that go into that to have them buying your prints to mean they should be considered good photographs. For example, if a kid has one opportunity to get senior shots taken by someone and they turn out crappy, they're very much pressured to buy them and force themselves to think they look good, even if they aren't, simply due to time constraints. This situation could have been the same for all I know. Maybe this was the only opportunity they had to get shots so they feel pressured to buy them all even if they aren't exactly what they wanted or what they were looking for. There's also some psychology that goes into people believing that things are good if they are told they are by an "authoritative" figure in the field, regardless of whether it's correct. While clients are the ultimate deciding factor in what sells, I certainly wouldn't take it as proof that the photos were actually great if the client still purchasing them, or vice versa. It sounds like people are offering a lot of legitimate advice and opinions, which is what you were soliciting when you posted them. You may not agree, but you do have to recognize that there may be something to an opinion when the same one is shared by many.

No, it wasn't the goal in this case, & on a commercial job I wouldn't work for print sales. I'd work for a day rate & print sales would be incidental.

My purpose was to get pics of a truck with all it's lights on in that particular curve just as the sun was on the horizon so it would throw some highlights in the side that would separate it from the dark "day for night" background that I would add later.
Their purpose was to get a nice shot of one of their trucks on the road in return.

The deal was that they would donate a tractor, trailer, & driver for one hour, in return for one 12" X 18" print.
At the time I delivered their choice of print, I showed them several proof prints of the "day for night" treatment & they insisted on buying them for their wall along with some of the prints I posted here. I hadn't intended to sell them but let them go because I appreciated all the help that they had given me.

Thanks for the comments.
