I have calibrated my monitor with an L* gamma setting.
When viewing my histogram on screen, is it advisable to set it to luminance,or,RGB?

Which will give me a more accurate histogram?

Thanks,
Mike

They're all accurate, in their own way. Just use the one that suits your needs.

There is no connection between monitor calibration
and the histogram of an image. The tone curve in your monitor profile determines how image colors are translated into display colors - it doesn't change the image data at all. The histogram, on the other hand, is a graphic representation of the image data. So simple logic logic says: "monitor profile doesn't affect image file contents, histogram mirrors image file contents, therefore monitor profile doesn't affect histogram."

Edit: BTW, the L* axis in the L*a*b* color space and Luminance as used a parameter for RGB image brightness are very different mathematical entities. The Luminance parameter used for histograms is usually computed from the RGB values according to the formula 30%R, 59%G, 11%B.

BTW, although I have never calibrated to L*, I have read that it has a linear section in the lowest part of the curve (as does the sRGB TRC) which will reveal more shadow detail than 2.2 gamma, but can also cause posterizing in some LCD monitors. So you might want to watch out for this.

Elie,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes,I have read that as well.
Recently got a new NEC pa 231,and as of now anyway....no issues??

I'm not absolutely sure,I will use the L* setting all the time [Still testing},maybe in some of my B&W images.

Mike, I've got a PA271w that gives me a "thrill up my leg" every time I use it...but ya still gotta balance your monitor with the printer.

Yes,I almost bought the 27in,but the price difference was too high.
I'm getting a pretty close match between monitor & printer now,,but I thought I'd try this L* setting as it was suggested to me.
Here is the image I am working on:
