I'm upgrading from a 40D. I mostly shoot baseball and football. I'm leaning towards the 60D or 7D, what do you think?

I've never shot a 60D, but I couldn't ask for a better camera than the 7D for sports.

If the 40D isn't doing it for you, the 60D probably won't either; I'd have to side for the 7D and it's AF upgrades.

There was no technical difficulty generating these images with a Canon 60D. As with other competent and capable camera bodies, the only challenge was to make sure the camera and lens were pointed at the action when it happened, and the shutter button was pushed at the correct time.

:p

Nicely put! I took some great pics with my xTi before I got the 7D. The 7D just made it a bit easier. Buy whichever you can afford.

(Seriously though, the 7D kicks ass on the sidelines)

I have 7D as my main camera and 50D as back-up. Main differences are that 7D has faster fps and handles low-light a lot better which certainly helps for sports where you need the fast shutter speed and light ma be low (floodlights, indoor, etc.).

As others say, if you can afford it, 7D for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions. It isn't that the 40D isn't doing the job it's that my 40D won't turn on. At this point I am not sure what the problem is. I am going to send it to Canon but it's my only camera and I don't want to be without one so I am going to get a new one and get the 40D fixed and keep it as a backup. I'm really leaning toward the 7D.

the 7D is great, i will say though that if you are shooting under poor lighting the noise seems worse than if you are shooting under even lighting at high ISO. just an observation, i dont fully understand how digital noise works

The 7D is an awesome camera. I upgraded from a (dead) 20D without any regret. I use it mainly for shooting my sons sports (tae kwon do and soccer mostly).

Any noise issues, look at Noise Ninja which can be a one click correction (but you can make it even better if you play around with the settings). NN solves noise on any camera of course and costs $45 for the home user.

@ Brian- You were correct in your observation- properly exposed shots will produce less noise across the board. I've used my 7D at ISO 12,800 and had perfectly usable shots. I wouldn't want to leave my camera there all the time, but it's nice to have the option.

7D if you can, i use it for shooting my school's ice hockey team and it kicks ass.

im going to try to shoot iso 12800 just to see what happens at this soccer game tonight that has the most insanely poor lighting. i imagine i might get some good exposures on the players and then the backgrounds will be underexposed with lots of noise in them rather than just black with noise in them

Heh; fair enough. I keep my 40D around as a backup to the 7D; if you can afford it, the 7's a wonderful camera.

If you can afford the 7D vs the 60D I would go for the 7D. The 7D leans more to the 1D Mark series the control buttons on the 7D are more programmable, you have more a 19 point focus points on the 7D vs 9 on the 60D, 100% view finder coverage, the frame rate is higher on the 7D 8 fps vs 60D 5.3 fps

A great photo only starts with the shutter release,
