Upgrading to CS5? What is up with 32 and 64 bit installations?

If I understand correctly, there are both 32 and 64 bit versions of CS5. My new computer will be running Win 7 Pro, 64 bit.

Is there any advantage to running one version or another of CS5? For example, is the 32 bit version limited on how much memory it can use, even though the OS sees 16 gig? And I make fairly regular use of my plug in library, especially NIK and Tiffen. Will a 32 bit plug in work in a 64 bit version of PS?

The first time I used CS5 under Mac 64 bits, I've found doesn't appear neither Lighting effects nor lens flare (filter>render) wich are in the 32 bits version....
I don't know if with Windows are the same.
Otherwise, you can imagine 32 or 64 bits as a team...the duty will be longer (in computer terms, of course) if you are using the smaller team.

I run CS5 on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and all the filters are available, including Lighting Effects and Lens Flare.

The only reason for even installing the 32-bit version (you have the option of installing both the 32- and 64-bit version, or one or the other) is if you have older plugins that have not been updated to work with 64-bit CS5. Other than that, no reason to even install the 32-bit version and waste disk space.

Then something else is going on.

Just checked. PSCS5, OSX 10.6.8 on a MacPro, 10Gb memory, 70% of which for PS.
Lens Flare was there.

Didn't check, but AFAIK Lightning effects works as well.

Availability of filters doesn't matter if you're using the 32 bit or 64 bit versions of CS5, what does make a difference is if your editing a image in 16 bit or 8 bit mode.
Lighting Effects is one that is only available for 8 bit images/documents.

Lens Flare does, But Lighting Effects doesn't.

Everything in gray isn't available in 16 bit mode.

In 8 bit mode everything is available.

I hope in future version of Photoshop CS* that all filters are available in 16 bit mode.

Ah. Waitaminute…

Seems obkcaptain is partly correct, and we are partly wrong :o

Checked here: Seems lighting effects is x32 only on OSX. weird.

From the comments here (external link):

There are no plans to update the aging Lighting Effects plug-in to 64bit. It’s like the Extract plug-in in CS4 which we replaced in CS5 with the new refine edge technology. We’re on the path to replace the Lighting Effects plug-in with something better in the future.

Ah, I see. I am using Windows 7 Pro.
Why would it be available for Windows and not OSX?
