I recently bought the SX150 and thought I'd post some examples of it's capability.

These 2 are fairly representative of the common AUTO photo. No Post-processing on these 2.

The next 3 show a normal, a zoom, and a crop from the zoom. It's illustrative of the IQ of the lens - if you look closely you can read the title of the statue "Freedom Sky". These 3 have all had the same small color contrast and small sharpening.

The final thing for this post is that it is easier to shoot movies with the SX150 than photos... and when I figure out how to post reference to them, I will.

A few comments about handleability. (sp)

Even though the SX150 is a bit more bulky than the Elph series, it's still small enough that you can drop it easily. I tied a knot in the carry-loop to make it tighter - then it was much more secure on my wrist.

As with most of this class, there's no viewfinder. This is OK most of the time, but in sun-glare I couldn't see anything. I went ahead and snapped some shots even though I couldn't see what I was shooting, and they came out OK... but getting composition in sun-glare was impossible for me.

I got a CaseLogic case for it that fits snugly - that's good for camera safety, but I do have to "dig" a little to get it in and out... still, better lightly on my belt than heavy around my neck like a DSLR.

The "Movie" button is a little too easy to push - I've taken 3 inadvertent movies (that I didn't know I was taking!) just by brushing across that button.

All-in-all, it's a keeper. I did get rechargeable batteries as recommended by others, and I've had no battery problems yet. My DSLR naturally has better IQ, but this compact will fill a need.

Here's 2 more. 1st normal, no PP; 2nd with close crop with small color & sharpen. I continue to be impressed by the info captured by this lens... much more than what you initially think at first look.

Those are nice pic samples. Good detail. I'd be satisfied if I were an Sx150 owner.

Interesting - how do you "attach" images?? The only way I've ever done is the

method.

I'm too much of a newbie myself with this camera to offer shooting advice with it.

What is "x5 movies" - I've never heard of that.

If you read the owners manual from the disc it will tell you . x 5 plays a one minute in 11 seconds it looks like a old fashion movie You can also use x 10 & x 15 for enen faster.

OK, got it... thought it might be some kind of slo-mo recording.

Here's one I took this morning - it's an alligator by a local pond. I shot this in my car sitting in the road, about hmmm.. 130 yards from the gator. The first is full zoom with a bit of PP... the 2nd is a crop of the first with no further PP. The gator is about 6 feet long.

Hey, Praz: The reason there is grain in that shed (although I can't see it on my monitor) is that you are shooting a scene with a lot of contrasting light.

To find out how good it can go (the camera) try an overcast day. Try a day with smooth, consistently cloudy conditions (but relatively bright) and you'll see how well it gathers details and exposes properly.

Shooting against the light, like you did, is difficult for any camera. Your pic looks good.

And to Bubby: Glad you're having so much fun with it. The SX series holds a dear place in my heart. It's how I started learning, and it's still a very capable camera for advanced users (of which I'm not).

Here's my sample with the 110. Your model is much better.

You can even tie it to a kite.

Hell there ~ I am new to the Canon forums and would love some advice. I have always owned Canon products and always will. I love taking photos and would love to learn more. I decided to purchase the SX130 during a pre-black friday sale and then on black friday the SX150 was cheaper than my SX130 purchase. So back went the 130. So far I love the 150 and once I master it I love to move up to an EOS. What would you say is the best way to learn digital photography? A class or forums?? Also I know that a good editing software is sometimes key to a great photo, what do you use? Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.:D

Hello, luvdsny - welcome to POTN.

There is a LOT of info in the discussions here. Use the search function to find your interests.

I'm a newbie to most of the software, and I didn't want to spend $$$ on the major ones used here. I found FastStone Image Viewer (free), which does a simple job of editing - there are others. There is sooo much that can be accomplished in software (called Post-processing, or PP)... you'll really like PP, it's one of the things that makes digital fun.

The other fun thing different from film is that you can shoot to your heart's content. It's easy to learn by just changing some parameters and shooting again, and again, and again... and then just delete the ones you don't want. The analysis and deletion of the bad stuff makes learning easier. And it's free. And as fast as you can load to your PC and click your editor.

I have a DSLR (click on my gear list) on which I use individual shooting modes; but on my SX150 I mostly use automatic mode because the stuff I'm shooting is pretty casual. This morning I shot 15 shots of my grandson wrestling with my dog on my sofa... maybe 3 or 4 will be keepers.

Experiment with the movie mode - it is soo easy!! You'll love it. It makes .mov files which are easily played by Windows software.

Have fun.
