So I'm here surfing the net and watching Oregon vs Arizona state and asu completes a pass play and the receiver gets shoved out of bounds, full speed, into what appears to be a (at least) 60 year old sports photographer with a big boy lens guessing about 500mm giant 8-10" opening and the guys monopod and lens go crashing into the ground and shatter as the guy does a tuck and roll lol

All you see is the guy get wrecked by the player and of course (me being a photographer) all I see is this $8000 lens go crashing into pieces hahaha

As an owner of one of those expensive lenses, I really can't find any amusement in this. Sadness, yes....laughter, definitely not.

Yes, hopefully he and his gear are insured, but just watching something like that would break my heart. I hope the photog is ok, equipment can be replaced but broken bones and internal injuries are a lot worse.

And I'd think a 500 is a bit much for sideline football shots, seems a 400 would be a much more useable range.

Ok, sir, I get your point, the guy was fine, just took a tumble, and please don't come in here and be a cranker.

Again.............. Point taken.

God, sometimes this forum has too many stuffy people without a sense of humor.

If you don't like my opinion, back out of the thread and go be a downer elsewhere :)

Anyways, good night, I'm done here.

i didn't see anything 'shatter'...but it does look like something broke off...i don't think it's a 500mm lens though...i'd guess it's something faster than f4, based on the size..

That's going to be a 400. That stuff happens quite often. I learned how fast a QB can throw a pass into the end zone at my first NFL game. I also learned to keep both eyes open.

Nah...I don't reckon the lens has been broken.
What you see bouncing around looks to be the hood that has been knocked off the lens.
If the lens had been broken in two, the the bit that broke off would be too heavy to bounce around as easily as that.
It would take a bigger hit than that to smash something like a 300/400/500/600L lens.

I remember photographing a semi-professional baseball game from a position of looking down the baseline from third base to home plate. The batter hit a line drive in my direction and I ducked, had I not ducked I would have bee hit.

After it was over I had this vision of me with a black eye, and the baseball stuck in the end of my lens.

Yeah, but what a shot that would be. It reminds me of the Tiger Woods shot that broke a guys lens.

The way that photographer has all of the additional accessories leads me to believe that this was his lens hood from the 400mm 2.8 lens. I at first thought holy crap that was his focusing grip but when i looked closely he gaffer taped his lens hood in addition to having a red rain cover.

I saw this moment too and I was shocked that the football player didn't even turn around to check up on what he did.

I saw it as well. The guy took a hard hit. Glad to see he was OK. 1st thing I thought of was I wondered if he was a forum member.

Poor guy gets smashed and you are complaining that others don't find this funny? Unbelievable. If it had been like a 20 year old like me maybe I would have thought damn that sucks. But this guy had to be like 60 and could do absolutely nothing to get out of the way.
