Aircraft fly overheard on approach to MCO where I work. I'd been meaning to catch a few of them in photos, especially the Virgin 747s. They keep a pretty good schedule, oddly enough, so I don't have to wait long after checking arrival times on the airport website.

I got this photo when there was a lot of low cloud - the 747 was hidden just before and after the shot. T3i using 100-400, 250mm, 1/512sec, f/5:

The next day I tried to get a similar shot but with a clearer sky. But the 747 wasn't approaching according to schedule. In fact, the whole sky was pretty empty. Hmm, weird. Oh, wait, there's a plane, a big one, a 747, but not an airline livery I recognize, and flying an unusual approach pattern...

400mm, 1/640sec, f/5.6, heavy crop. Some color, contrast and brightness adjustments to recover from haze fade.

Of course - I forgot POTUS was due in Orlando for a fundraiser.

About 5 minutes later the Virgin flew overhead on the usual route. 400mm, f/5.6, 1/500 sec.

Anyway, not spectacular images, but interesting enough for me.

Nice captures. Would love to see af1 someday.

I like what Virgin is going for with that underbelly logo, but that choice of typeface is heinous!

A cracking surprise, and one that I will bet got you all excited like a kid once again!!!!

Regarding the typeface for VA, it has been received the same way this side of the pond as well, like mikekelley was saying. Emirates have a much better approach for their underbelly logo, although I am unsure if they have it on all of their aircraft or not.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, seeing AF1 was quite a surprise, especially as it doesn't adorn the central Florida skies all that often - I bet the folks in DC see it enough to not even raise their eyes to watch it.

Yeah, that font on the Virgin bellies is a bit odd (say that to your significant-other with a straight face!), but maybe they went for that on-purpose - it doesn't look quite normal, but is still legible, so you remember to look at it more often.

It's disingenuous to call it AF1 -- if the president is not aboard. Nice captures either way. ;)
