Hi - recently I bought a canon 24-70 L from Canon, this is a refurb lens. I was expecting more sharp image from this lens. I have hard that there are many bad copies of the 24-70 L out there. I need your help to give me some feedback on these images to see if I should return the lens. However it could be me as well, not the lens - so feel free from both angle. I am using a 60D body on a tripod to take these shots. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are parts of the pictures that seem 'almost' L lens sharp, and areas that are obviously beyond the depth of field range.

I would resort to some pixel peeping using a setup where you can control the precise focus spot and be able to measure exactly where the depth of field covers when compared to the calculated depth of field. When the exact focus spot is found you can enlarge it to determine how sharp the lens is. Be sure you control any source of camera movement, and compare various focal lengths / f-stops.

It looks like you shot the sunflower and strawberries with the lens wide open. If you examine the tapestry, the depth of field is rather narrow. I'm not sure why the strawberries aren't crisper because they look like they're within it. More test shots may tell the tale. The dark center of the sunflower looks in focus, but many of the petals appear to be outside it. With respect to the shot of the toy, the foreground is out of focus, as well as the part of the toy there. There's little in these images that suggest that the lens is faulty. However, as mentioned, it's not a good test.

Use a yardstick with clear incremental markings and lean it at 45 degrees away from the camera and take a series of images changing the aperature ( Fstop) one stop a shot. Have the yardstick or meterstick ( which ever applies) well lit, you are going for sharp not light gathering ability. All images taken from same camera position

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I can not say how much helpful your comments are. Here are few more for you review. I am still trying to see if the lens has any issues or not. Thanks

Testing a lens when you have doubts about it requires a very exact set up so you can eliminate factors not associated with the lens. This means a tripod, remote release (or timer), mirror lockup, a subject with graduations (like the yardstick mentioned above), etc. You also want to take a series with autofocus and one with liveview. You can't just point the camera at some leaves and expect to tell whether it is the lens or not.

Thanks to all of you for your expert opinion. I am still trying to run more test to see if I can come up with a conclusion. However I just wanted a quick feedback ; looking at the pictures and comparing them to the other thread "Lens Sample Photo" it does look like the lens is ok, but I do need to run the yardstick test for numeric evidence. Do you guys kinda agree that the sharpness looks similar to the other pictures posted by other users using the same lens though?

The parts that are in focus look similar to what I would expect from my 24-105 L. Zooms are typically not quite as sharp as a prime, and there are definite differences at some focal lengths and f-stops. If you test your lens carefully you will find it's 'sweet spot' for each focal length. Mine is about 35mm @ f-5.6/8. But, my L zoom isn't as sharp as the 100mm Macro or the 400mm f-5.6.
