It's exiting to see your own flesh and blood playing.
Nice caught.
Symes, I see only one penalty, the potential one a #2. Where's the other one?

Bill,

Good to see you posting again. Looks like you were playin' Hazelwood, correct? What rink were these taken at? The lighting looks too good for north county. ;)

Well done. While I have no kids who play hockey, I've gone to a few H.S. games to take some shots. I find the lighting quite difficult, and from my place in the stands, in order to get over the glass, my 70-200 f2.8 isn't long enough, and with my 1.4 tc, it's even less than enough light.

Can you please supply info on the shots, lens, settings, iso, etc.

Thanks

they are both illegal equipment penalties...

1. Mouthguard not worn properly...

2. Pants unzipped...

depends where you are but the mouthguard and the pants are either 2 or 10 depending on where you are and they have to rectify the situation...

Cheers,

As far as the POTENTIAL penalties go, i think theres a LOT of interpretation as far as the mouthguard goes - he wiggles the mouthguard but its still IN the mouth. As far as the pants go... would be a pretty lame call if someone actually called that one. They fit comfortably and i've never actually seen a rule specifying the zipper has to be all the way down. Now perhaps if that was a cut or worn piece hanging there, maybe it would be worth a warning. Besides, usually the refs can't keep up wiht him anyway :p And yes, he DID have a pretty good night on the scoresheet - 5 points (2g +3A)

Back to the photos.. The EXIF should be embedded but i shot 70-200mm L handheld from in the stands. Most shots are 1600 ISO at Tv 400 resulting in a ~ F4 - F5.6 Also, i always shoot RAW so its much easier to set the WB in post. I usually crank the saturation a couple nothces as well.

Alan.. Yes you get the prize - it was Hazelwood - the rink was Fairview Heights and interestingly the lights were a bit better than normal but still lame as they had MANY lights still burned out.

I don't want to start an argument about the interpertation of rules, but playing with a mouthguard half way out is extremely dangerous...half way out while taking a hit and he would be in a world of hurt with that down his throat. The rule on the pants is in place so you don't get a stick in the Cohonnes...

At the end of the day both are considered lame penalties, and I would agree, but the game is not about comfort, it is about safety and if I was on the ice both would be warnings but the second infraction would be penalties...

but as a ref who has refereed high level hockey - actually refereed Sidney Crosby at the Canadian National Midget Championships when he was 14 - these are factors that are non-negotiable when you are being assessed by the powers that be... :) :)

nice night on the scoresheet too...good luck to your son this year...

Cheers,
