Silly question, but how come there is no mode dial on the top of the 1DX?

1-series bodies don't have mode dials. You hold down one button and spin the dial next to the shutter button.

This keeps you from accidentally changing modes because the dial rubbed against your pant leg while you were chasing that Pulitzer-winning shot! :D

Cool, I hate it when I'm chasing the pulitzer winning shot that I accidentally switch to bulb mode. Happens every day.

Thanks for the info.

Apparently there was a factory mod to install a lock on the mode button on the 5D2...but that was for woossies...drill a hole and put a nail in it...does the job fine!:p

But what if you wanted a 31 second exposure?

I Thought this thing was not going to do F/8.....look at the first portrait:eek:

I have just had it confirmed to me by Canon NZ that the 1DX has been firmware updated to enable focusing at f8!!

I was hugely surprised this wasn't in from the start, but I figured thanks to the "outrage" over this on the net and how many wildlife photographers it would affect (although they still might prefer APS-H) I had a feeling they would address it before releasing the camera to stores. I'm hoping for their sake that it was more of a firmware change than physical change.

They won't say whether it's firmware only or a physical change, of course, but they were claiming up and down that they had to drop f/8 focusing in order to make the autofocus system as it is more "precise". There's no way they're going to make physical changes to the hardware of that scope this late in the game.

So of course, they lied about why they weren't providing f/8 focusing. The real reason for dropping to f/5.6 and using the above as an excuse was firstly, to artificially increase the demand for big expensive lenses, and secondly, to make it possible for them to introduce a 1DX successor that does focus at f/8 as an "enticing upgrade". The f/5.6 limitation is of course merely a firmware-enforced limitation, nothing more.

It's getting to the point with Canon that one can hardly believe anything they say at all anymore, enough so that if they claim a camera will have a certain resolution, one is best off waiting to see the actual images shot by third parties with the new camera to verify that the resolution is what Canon claims it is. ???

BAD Canon! Continuous dishonesty like this will eventually screw you over in the market!

How is it dishonest if they've given people what they want?

It's like calling someone a liar because they gave you a bag with $10,000 in it when they told you it contained $1,000.

For all intents and purposes, this camera doesn't really exist yet. It's still only in the hands of people who are obligated to provide Canon with feedback. For all we know, that guy shown shooting in Africa came back and said, "Yo, Canon, make this thing work at f/8 please?"

It's an educated guess.

Building hardware on a massive scale requires lots of planning, and that takes a lot of time. Once a piece of hardware has some limitation built into it, it doesn't get changed without incurring huge expenses, because you have to change the fabrication facilities to account for it. This isn't like programming PLDs or something that's designed to be easily modified. These guys are building hardware for keeps, at the fab level. And remember: the same autofocus assembly that is going into the 1DX is also going into the 5D3. Ain't no way they're reissuing the sensor design at this stage of the game.

And if it isn't a problem with the hardware, then it's a problem with the firmware. Firmware is trivial to change, enough so that it can even be done after the device itself has been manufactured.

Canon's claim was that the f/5.6 limitation was due to the increased sensitivity they gave the sensor. If all that is in the firmware, as it almost certainly is given the timing of the announcement we're discussing, then their claim is total bunk. Worst case is they have to invoke a separate focusing algorithm when an f/8 combination is mounted on the camera. But the actual sensitivity of the sensor itself is strictly a function of the hardware.

And that is why I call BS on Canon. If they really do make f/8 focusing available, then they reveal their original claim as an utter lie.

The f/5.6 limitation is quite clearly not what people want. People don't like limitations, they like capabilities.

It's like calling someone a liar because they gave you a bag with $10,000 in it when they told you it contained $1,000.

No, it's like telling people you're going to give them $1000 when you previously had been giving them $10000, giving some lame excuse for it that implied you had no choice, and then later saying you've decided to give them $10000 after all.

It's not like f/8 focusing is something new. It's something that was removed from the line.

For all intents and purposes, this camera doesn't really exist yet. It's still only in the hands of people who are obligated to provide Canon with feedback. For all we know, that guy shown shooting in Africa came back and said, "Yo, Canon, make this thing work at f/8 please?"

If the autofocus sensor were unique to the 1DX, I might be swayed by this argument. But it's going into the 5D3 as well. And that is enough to nuke this argument.

No, this is almost certainly a firmware-only change.
