Going to Hong Kong. Thinking about buying 70-200 2.8 IS II

So I am off to Hong Kong in a few days, and I would love to know where I can find the best camera shop in town?

I know there are hundreds of camera shops in HK, but I want to know which one is the very best? Perhaps something comparable to B&H in New York?

Thinking about buying the 70-200 f2.8 IS II, and I want to buy it from a place that offers top notch customer service, just in case I find out that there is something is wrong with my lens, e.t.c.

I'm going to presume you're OK with grey market/no warranty, since HK warranty won't help you later on anyway. Look into Echo photo & audio, they're tiny, pretty much the opposite of B&H, but they're honest, have great prices, and if you have a problem they'll try help you with it. I've bought several things from them. They're located in Tsim Sha Tsui, here's their website:

Don't bother buying from the big chain stores, they do offer warranty, which is useless to you anyway since its HK only, but their prices won't match Echo and I'm not sure about their service quality.

Thanks alot for this information. It will help.

I have no problem with HK-only warranty. I live in Bangkok and will be going to HK many times during the next year. I kinda have to anyway, because of thai-visa runs.

And I guess I can mail it over for fixing / calibration, if that should be nessicary?

Cheers!

Agree with Sirrith. I have bought a couple of bodies and several lenses off Mr Chan at Echo. Great service, honesty and price.

Cool. I will look there for sure! :)

One more thing about the warranty / possible need to return the lens.
Lenses within this price range should get "priority one, superduper ultra mega quality controll", right?

I have never heard anyone having problems with their newly purchased 70-200 f2.8 II.

You sure about that?

I have heard many times that if you buy the lens from an authorised Canon / Nikon dealer at HK with HK warranty, the lens will be covered by international warranty.

Yup. They made the change in 2010, no more international warranty.

last time i heard, B&H has horrible customer service.
but yes, i would also like to know where in HK a store i can trust for authentic canon products.

Bummer! Kinda stupid move to make, since so many people like to buy lenses in Hong Kong.

With this new policy, I bet many people stopped buying from Hong Kong, which hurts the sales for many HK-dealers.

On the other hand, canon's pitiful 1 year warranty probably doesn't really matter that much to people looking to save money, so they'll just buy it grey market.

I'll buy my lens first day I arive in HK. Then I will have plenty of time to make sure that my lens is working, and not having any weird sounds. :D

Give Echo a call, they'll tell you the price if you ask for it, and ask for Mr Yip, he speaks English.
