I was just archiving some images and, not having posted much football recently, I thought I'd share a random selection:

Something with the 1D and 70-200mm f/2.8L for starters...

Gavin,

As always, a treat to see your work. The aerial battle shot is simply amazing. Your understanding of exposure, timing, and framing is evident in all your work and something I need to continually work on. Keep giving us such inspirational work! Now, when was it you were scheduling your US workshops?

John

Gavin - They're all superb but #2 blows me away. I've never been able to shoot into the sun with anything approaching an acceptable ratio of keepers to culls -- somehow, someway I've got to learn how to do it. Do you consider the use of a light meter to be essential for shooting into the sun successfully?

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

On that note - I tried shooting into the sun last week... what a disaster. The players looked fine but the field they were playing on looked like someone had spilled a bottle of bleach. I will have to figure this out, as it is a huge weakness in my skill set. I have one more very long week of shooting coming up next week, and then I am done for the season.... maybe some of your skill will flow over this way if only for a fleeting moment. Your consistency is wonderful... always inspiring.

Croasdail, it looks like shooting into the sun requires the correct background.

Gavin, lovely as always. BTW I just received a big box of "parts" for remote shooting from B&H based on your kit pictures in my Q&A thread. Haven't gotten the XPosed plate yet ... they don't have a secure website for accepting credit cards so I will need to telephone. I will be looking for some places to do some experiments soon. My only outstanding issue at the moment is the switch for the remote triggering device on the PocketWizard transmitter.

Fantastic stuff as usual Gavin! No 4 stood out for me as I was there that night taking the photos for Chelmsford’s programme and got nothing anywhere near that good. Where did you shelter from the elements, which I didn't enjoy having had to endure even worse at the first game the previous Saturday? I should be getting my hands on a 70-200 f2.8 in a few weeks so hopefully my efforts under floodlights will start to improve.

Cheers (Matt?)!

I was sitting a few yards down from the home dugout. It was a long, long night I recall ;) and I didn't shelter from the elements (more fool me), I popped the rain cover on the camera and sat out in the downpour  There are a few more pics from the game here (external link) (these are the batch that went to the NLP).

The f/2.8 lens will certainly make a difference under lights at New Lodge. You can get 1/400s, f/2.8 at ISO3200 in the bright patch, although it's more like 1/250s in the goalmouths! Hmmm. Wonder what the lights will be like at Melbourne Park?

Good luck at Margate tomorrow...

Dwight.... I think I figured out what I did wrong... I used the wrong metering mode so my readings were off, I took an averaging reading off the grass rather then a spot, so I was probably at least a full stop too high, if not more..... amature mistake, dang it!

Gavin... more stuff to buy huh... I think I will be covering track this spring so some of this stuff might come in handy. I am thinking I body aimed horizontal at the hurdles while I sit at the end with long glass.... hmmmmm

Gavin, I got the Pocket Wizard setup including the Pre-Trigger, a couple of safety cables, Bogen universal mounting plate, Superclamps with and without stud, Hama Clamp/Table Tripod, Bogen 488RC0, Ergorest Multi Pod, Bogen table top tripod without head, Bogen variable friction magic arm, Bogen Pro Socket Superclamp with safety pin, Bogen 484 mini ball head, Gitzo table top tripod and a second Sandisk Extreme III 4 GB CF card. I expect to get the XPosed plate but they don't have a secure website for credit card acceptance so I will telephone.

I am currently battling getting my 3300 frame timelapse of the boxing ring setup, fight and takedown into a movie format ... all the software I have found so far can't handle the amount of data and runs out of memory ... amateur programming as far as I am concerned as they want to make it easy on themselves and keep everything in memory at once with numerous copies which is silly, sigh.

Dwight - your images are probably just too big, and their largeness does not do any benifit. I would reduce them to hd format - then do you build. The reason for this, is something like PS can batch reduce these, and maintain the image quality better then a video rendering software would do. 3300 frames is nothing. Depending on your frame rate, that is only about 117 seconds of film, something a real video program should be able to handle.
