Do the 580's have a consistent temperature throughout there power range? I know that some of the studio strobes can vary as much as 600 degrees

I have gear. Period.

I think the beginning portion of the impulse is bluer in color.

I don't think it varies 600 degrees, but it does vary.

If you use AWB or Flash white balance setting on your camera, the 580EX II (not the original model) will report its color temp to the camera and the image will be recorded accordingly. You could take some shots in RAW mode at various power levels, open them with your RAW converter and see what the "as shot" color temp is.

Here are the color temperature readings I just got from my 580EX II flash (three measurements per power level using a Sekonic color meter). As Curtis said, it does vary but not as much 600ยบ. The chart below also shows that the color temperature varies from shot to shot even for the same power level (less at the higher power levels than at the lower levels).

I did a test a while back with my 580EX II and a WhiBal card. I varied the aperture to maintain the same exposure as the flash power changed. My results are below:

1/1 - 6100k (-2)
1/2 - 6300k
1/4 - 6400k
1/8 - 6450k
1/16 - 6400k (+2)
1/32 - 6500k (+3)
1/64 - 6500k (+2)
1/128 - 6600k (+4)

The number in ( ) is the green/magenta slider in Lightroom. A positive number indicates adding magenta to counter a green cast.
