Both shot with same exact settings shot 1 right after the other.

EDIT: Terrible link. BLAH.
I'm going to say flourescent lighting. Were your shutter speeds fast?

Try to get a a full cycle, some people have said 1/125th and some around 1/60th. Your mileage may vary.

Yep, thats the cycling of the lights. You can shoot at shutter speeds slow enough to capture a full cycle, 1/30 of a second should do it.

Could someone chime in with the "formula" for shutter speeds with this type of lighting? I can't recall.

Oh man it's an attack of the fluorescent lights! Generally, using flash and shooting above the ambient will get rid of those nasty cycles of sine waves. If that's not an option, try shooting at 1/60th and hope the lights play nice - you might have to use a custom wb in pp later on!

Of course, you can just play it off as dangerous chemicals in the air as the students were playing with chemicals. :D

I keep hearing some emotive song by Muse or the Used going in my head when looking at Meat Heart.

EDIT: At least it's not My Chemical Romance.

Here in the upper left hemisphere where alternating current cycles at 60hz, a full cycle is 1/60 second. So a shutter speed of 1/60 will cover it.

Theoretically, you'll get the full range of brightness and color temp in half a cycle, and 1/125 shutter speed comes pretty close. 1/40 will cover 1 1/2 cycles which should also work. Anything slower than 1/40 will cover multiple cycles and that's fine, too.

You'll get minor color variations at 1/50, 1/80 or 1/100, and bigger problems as you go past 1/125.

In Europe and elsewhere with AC voltage at 50hz, well hopefully you can figure out the math.

Compact fluorescent bulbs have electronic ballasts that cycle much faster and don't suffer these problems.

Thanks, Curtis!

I pointed Jake here to post the question because I knew someone would have a good answer, and you came through!

Jake, are you getting this?
