My PC is getting jealous and having a tantrum because I'm spending too much time on my new iMac.

Seriously, I was trying to transfer some microSD files into my old PC (A8N32-SLI). But I keep getting a Not Responding error on the Explorer. So I restarted my PC as I usually do when my PC start acting up. Well all I was getting was the ASUS splash screen. It does not go any further than that.

To enter BIOS setup. I need to press the DEL key. This won't work. I just keep getting the POST screen.

Looks like it's getting stuck on:
Auto-detecting USB Mass Storage Devices ..
Device #01:

My take on the whole thing is that I might be using an older type of card reader.

Unfortunately I cannot access the BIOS setup in able to disable Auto-Dectect on USB Mass Storage.

One solution is to get the latest copy of the BIOS and reload it. But where am I going to find another PC where I can load the newer firmware into a floppy disk? That's how ASUS loads new firmware. Since the boot up sequence is C: > CD: > A: Floppy. I might just burn a CD with the newer files.

Therefore I'm trying to find if there are a work-around getting to the BIOS setup without using the DEL key. Any of function keys (F1-F12) might work?

I'm hoping one of the PC savvy members could help me point to the right direction

PS I have tried using a different keyboard but same results.

Have you got a PS2 connector in the back panel?

If so try a PS2 keyboard, or use a PS2 adapter.

It maybe something has gone wrong with the USB drivers, or controller on the motherboard.

thanks. I have one in my office.

As a side note. The PC eventually came back to life. So I've decided to System Restore it from yesterday. But it did not solve the problem. I suspect you are right. Maybe some drivers are corrupted. But at least I know that if I leave the PC alone, it eventually comes back as long as I have the older card reader plugged in. Will try again tomorrow when I have the neccessary items.

Thanks

If it used to boot, and now it doesn't, then something has gone wrong.

You mention it works ok with the old card reader, so it's likely the problem is not with the computer, but with the card reader you were using.

If everything works on that computer, but the card reader, then it's time to throw out the card reader :)

Playing with drivers and system restore won't fix anything, as nothing is wrong :)

Some ASUS boards access BIOS via the INS (Insert) key.

if you boot the P.C. and there is a USB connected cardreader with a memory card in it, the P.C. may well be trying to boot from the memory card... fix would be take the card out while booting.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Great! I left the PC running and went to bed. Woke up and found the PC on the BIOS setup screen.

I just disabled the USB Legacy Support. And it booted fine now. No time to play around now. Going to be late for work.

Thanks for your input guys. I will still find out later, what other options I can get myself in trouble :p

Sounds like either power supply, or the disc drive is on it's way out.
Or, something in the board has failed.

You need to be able to do some proper hardware fault diagnosis, or take it to someone who can.

It;s really a legacy equipment that need to be retired. So I agree with you on that part. It's also a Heinz57/frankenstein machine in the first place. It's probably going to be replaced by a laptop. I just got a new desktop. But I still have some application that I haven't migrated over. That's what I was actually doing when it crashed.

As you have also mentioned. I blame the old card reader too.

Thanks to you and everyone else that gave me useful suggestions. It directed me to the right direction on troubleshooting the problem. It helped a lot.
