So after seeing all of these wonderful photos of the milky way, it made me really want to give it a try. Sadly, I live in the northeast of Massachusetts and there is not many places I can go within 2 hours for good night sky. Thanks all for the tips and sample photos. Here's mine that I took last night. How can I make this better? Mine doesn't have that defined look as many here.

Not a great time to try and shoot the Milky Way. Between October thru February (I think it's Feb.), although still visible, the most colorful part (galactic core?) is usually not visible at all in this hemisphere. May-September is prime Milky Way time.

Taken last week in Utah,

Still forming an opinion if the A7s is as good or better than my 6D. At this point I can say one thing I really love is being able to crank the Iso to 200,000 and seeing what i'm going to get then backing off for the pic; that and the weight of the A7s is nice too.

WOW , looks like daytime shots there . I see you mention ISO to 200,000 ??? Are they really going that high now ? What would be the reason for using such a high ISO ?? Not disagreeing or cause an ruchus but i never heard of ISO that high .

I see now on the Sony Store . Had to look it up . Unbelieveable , i did not know those 4Ks' were going that high ! Did you have to buy a 4K monitor to be able to use the 4K ??

Beyond human vision.
Presenting the α7S, the world’s smallest1 full frame interchangeable lens camera. Images and video come alive with a breakthrough 15.3 stops of dynamic range. ISO sensitivity up to 409,600 reveals astonishing detail and color even in the dead of night. Video excels with Full Pixel Readout, a 4K-optimized sensor and uncompressed 4K output via HDMI.

Celestron I don't own a TV :(
I use the 200,000 ISO to see what is there but image at a normal 10-12,000 ISO over the typical 20-30 seconds BUT (as the master NCHANT has taught me) not at 1.4 or 2.8, but at higher f-stops...I think it was F4.5 for the globlin valley shot....Hey I'm still learning :)
We did shoot video in the dark using ISO 200,000 and it looks like daylight of course. I'll have to see if I can find that clip. My next use of the A7s is in a pop up hunting blind put up about 30 yards from a barred owl box we put up 2 weeks ago, turn it on, go home for breakfast and review the vid...this after letting it go from about 30 mins before daylight and 30-40 after. I haven't checked to see how long it will record video until it stops.

Sorry bout the TV but then again if you don't have a TV then do you have cable ? Being a 4k camera my thought would be you have to use an extremely large card to collect video for that length of time if your battery doesn't die first . BTW since you do have a 4k camera with video capability you might check out this forunm if your not already a member there and see some of the videos people are posting now that are 4k .
