Makena State Park, Maui

This was my second attempt 2 weeks ago. Just ran outside my house, focused with live veiw x10 zoom
10x25sec + 5 Blacks done in DSS/PS. ISO 1600 @ 2.8 Canon 70D, Sigma 17-50 f2.8 @ 17mm
Nothing spectacular, but glad I god something. Pleiades in the lower right.

Winter is obviously not the best time, clear cold skys yes, but a lot of LP with all the snow. I live outside Oslo, Norway

Went out last nigh, but failed. Just couldn't get a decent focus and the moon was full. Must use my contacts instead of glasses!

Wish I had a longer lens, Jupiter was really big and bright.

Getting hooked on this......but been so few clear nights lately.

- Some of the nicest deep sky images are with wide/ultrawide lenses so don't worry about long FL.

- Winter is obviously the best time, if you are targeting Orion or M45. You will miss them badly on summer nights.

- You got very nice pin point stars that indicates a good focus. That is the key to nice night images.

- I see more than 6 stars in Pleiades and that is again an indication of job being done right.

Keep up the good work and wishing you plenty of dark, clear nights.

Will be heading farther north to our cabin in 2 weeks. Hardly any light pollution.
Hopefully some clear skys and maybe some Northern lights.

Just a suggestion please.

Which lens would you suggest for shooting stars?
Samyang 14 F/2.8 or 24 F/1.4, or is the latter worth the extra money?
I already own a Canon 10-22 USM and I am new to astrophotography but I want to have a go at it.

I would choose the 14 but I would suggest an 8mm fisheye from Samyang.

The 14/2.8 wouldn't give you much more than the 10-22. Even though it's not as fast, being wider at 10mm would allow about a half stop untracked longer exposure without star trails than the 14/2.8 so it would pretty much equal out. The 24/1.4 would be a different game. But I personally feel it's too long on crop for wide field and to short for deep sky objects. It would do well for a stitched pano type shot though. And I have seen a lot of great stuff with 35mm lenses on FF so it could work well for you.

Use what you already have to start. That may not be the absolute best lens but it's certainly capable. Get a feel for what's involved and where you want to go with it. You may end up spending money on a lens now and finding out that you need a better tripod or perhaps a tracker.

Hey Faberkalu. What lenses do you currently have other than the 10-22? Would you considered getting one of the small trackers (star adventurer, skytracker, astrotrack, etc)?

What are the shooting conditions like where you live? If it's really dark and you have a fast lens then you might be set for a while.

I have all the lenses you mentioned in addition to a few other very useful Rokinons but then when I am serious about capture, I only take 14mm F2.8 with me.
This lens is AMAZING and SECOND to NONE.
For the price, even for triple the price, you can't get a better deal.

Here's a shot from Long Key, Florida taken in July 2014. The mangroves were illuminated by an outdoor security light from a house across the waterway. Exposure was 1 minute.
