thats a beautiful shot!
Isn't the Tokina 11-16 a crop lens?
Yes it is, I'd previously used it with my XSi. At 16mm it works fine on the full-frame, below that it will vignette. It was the best lens I had for the quick trip up there, my next best options were the 50mm or 85mm f/1.8 lenses.
Not only you found a nice dark sky but excellent rock formation of the location to go with landscape foreground.
I guess it is as good if not better than Big Bear lake area in terms of dark sky and I must pay a visit soon, before getting too hot.
Thank you, the Alabama Hills just seemed like they would be a great spot for this. One of my next purchases will be the Yongnuo wireless triggers, I think that lighting the rocks up with a gel'd flash might provide some interesting images. This was a little further from OC than my other options but it was an area I was already familiar with from my pre-photography days. I am hoping to do Joshua Tree, Mojave National Preserve, and Anza-Borrego sometime soon. Of those three, Borrego is the only one I'm familiar with and it has virtually no cell coverage, as this was a quick over-nighter by myself that put the Hills as my best destination. Would have preferred something closer though!
