My last post to this forum was in August, so I thought I'd stop by and say, "hello!"
Here is a NightScape I took just last week in Zion National Park. It was in the Big Bend area of Zion Canyon. The photo is of "The Organ", with The Great White Throne and Angel's Landing flanking it on the left and the right. This fisheye lens view shows the canyon wall behind me at the top of the photo.

Next to it is the same scene w/o light painting.
What's the group's feeling about the light painting: Do you think it adds or distracts in this case?
If anyone be interested in the technical details on how this light painting was done,
just click on the above photo and scroll through the details...
(There are additional details here (external link).)

Royce , great shot and to answer your question I like the light painted version a lot, definitely adds to the shot IMO

I'm very jealous of all these milky way images. Here in the UK we see it extremely rarely. In many years of offshore sailing at night, absolutely no light pollution miles out to sea I reckon I can count the number of times I've seen it on the fingers of one hand. And even then for maybe 20 minutes or so before its gone!

The painted lights made the shot looks better and dramatic, great job.

Did you shoot this from the road?

Cheers,

I feel very blessed. Our Utah air is much drier. We have a greater number of clearer nights (one of the few benefits of living in a desert). Then there's the light pollution factor: England's population density of 395/km2 (1,023/sq mi) is about 12 times greater than the United States, and 30 times greater than my home state of Utah!

Check our this link about doing NightScapes on a Budget (external link), and follow Roger Moffatt of Stevenstone, England. Milky Way photography can be done in the UK :)

Yes, Tony, I shot from a location that was about 100 feet from the road. Here is a map of my location and lights (external link).

Thanks Todd. I have put this in other places but I was a little lazy about processing. I need to "fix" those other places :)

Thanks for posting the Bethells shot, lomenak. I was wondering how dark it would be there. Nice shot of an Auckland summer icon.
That's awesome Mike6158.

Yeah, it can get really dark there. Definitely good place for this sort of shots and not that far from the city.

I posted these in the astronomy & celestial section too, but thought they might be more fitting here. Taken in Big Sur, 5D mk2 + 16-35L. Enjoy!
