Airglow and the Milky Way

Airglow is produced by a chemical reaction in the high-atmosphere and appears green in the camera but is invisible to the naked eye.

I tried this yesterday but it didn't come out as great.

First I tried f3.5, Iso 1600, 30sec, my picture was just white, could this be because of the moon?
Then I tried f8, Iso 800, 25sec, this was starting to look like it, but not alot of stars and you could see they were already starting to look like lines.

I don't have a place were it's really dark, hope that's not a problem

What lens were you using?

If you try to shoot it with the moon in-frame, then yes, the image will be way over-exposed. The sky needs to be as dark as possible when you're taking these types of photos.

17-55mm, The moon was not in-frame but close. I guess I'll try again when there's less moon ;) and not cloudy, this will be difficult. :) thx

I know you're not asking for critique, but I'd like to suggest that you rotate the first shot a bit to the right. The entire scene is going left. Line up your vertical based on the church and not the headstones.

It's a super creepy shot - I dig it!

Make sure you're shooting at 17mm too. As wide as possible.

If you're in an area with a lot of light pollution, there's really not much you can do. The photos are never going to turn how the way you want them to. You will need to travel to a remote place where the skies are very dark, and preferably on a moon-less night.

Dark skies are ideal, however if the moon is in the sky you can still get the shot. Light pollution is always an issue, but I accept it will usually be there now, so use it to your benefit :)

This was taken with the moon about 15 degrees out of the frame (top right side) and still managed to pull the milky way out :)

A Panel of 8 Starry Night Landscape Photographers

A panel of well-known night photographers: Ben Canales, Brad Goldpaint, David Kingham, Mike Berenson, Jack Fusco, Greg Gibbs, and myself (interviewer and event scheduler) recently discussed our approaches to starry night landscape photography.

You can view a YouTube video recording, as well as links to software, hardware, and the photos we discuss, by going to this blog post (external link).

FUTURE VIDEOS: I plan on doing additional one-on-one interviews with top night photographers. These on-air video hangouts will have a producer, who will move the camera (and screen share) around, and field live chat (text) questions coming in from the listening audience -- freeing me to interview the guest photographer.

If you wish to know about these future events, join my meet-up group (external link), or subscribe to my YouTube channel.
