That looks awesome even if it was not done in one shot.

thanks mate, i always try to get the shot at the same time/framing/focal length to keep it as genuine as possible (i do blend tho) but yea it was just impossible with this location when we went past it, but i do admittedly liked how this image turned out myself :)

First off, That shot is Awesome! It's YOUR work. It doesn't matter if you combined the images in PS or not, it's still amazing art work. I understand the thinking of some folks about getting everything in camera, but so many times its not practical or, as you found, its impossible. Combining photos in PS in no way diminishes the photographic skill it takes to get one or two or three shots.

Second. What was the focal length for that MW shot. It's HUGE and the processing is fantastic. I wish I could come up with a MW shot half as good as that!

reposting from the 5D4 thread :P

QUOTED IMAGE
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/Jx1Yq1 (external link) Milky Way and the Trees (external link) by Tony (external link), on Flickr

something different to what i normally do, a composite with MW and foreground taken couple nights apart and with different focal lengths (but from the same Western Australia road trip that i was just on), mainly because i loved the dead trees in the salt lake when we went through it in WA but was bummed that i wasn't able to get a good MW attempt due to timing/bad weather (and not sure if i'll get to visit WA again anytime soon :-( ), so decided to have a little fun and get (pretend) a little artsy :P

AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fully agreed Paul. Just spectacular work.

I'm going to bet the Milky Way was 50 or 70mm.

good call it was 50mm, in this situation it was captured on a tracker BUT i've gotten it untracked at settings of f/1.4 8 sec and ISO6400 and get very close results after the usual stretching in post (this was at a dark site of course)

I too am a composite MW shooter. Because I want the cleanest possible image when printing 24x36", I have learned to shoot tracked/stacked MW and compositing in a blue hour landscape such as this one...

how do you deal with the slight movement of the foreground tracking MW when stacking with your foreground exposure if you don't mind me asking? my PS skills are average at best and i am always worried if i use tracker with images with FG i won't be able to blend properly due to FG not fully aligning therefore always went with high ISO for MW, if that made any sense haha

I move the MW exposure lower than the sharp terrain exposure by 10-20 pixels, or whatever is needed, so its blurry terrain is not visible. With a well defined horizon with nothing like trees poking over the top, it's super easy. It becomes a much more challenging edit when trees are poking over the horizon. Look back a couple of pages at my "Milk of Life" image.

Great composition.
It's always said for a great MW we need a foreground object-something to connect us to the MW. This one is totally unique!
