When we skipped the USB external drive, and imported directly to the hard drive on the laptop, they are ok. We also eliminated the card, and card reader as they both work fine with my laptop. In his case, the problem seems to have started after he upgraded to Lightroom 3.5 - not sure if this is significant. Well, since the problems happen with the external drive and not with the laptop, then I'd look at the external drive and/or the associated connections rather than Lightroom. Yes, you can have problems with external "stuff". Tony
