Hello POTN members,

I sold my 40D and all related gear and made the move to an Olympus micro four/thirds camera. Just got tired of lugging all the gear around but still wanted the features and interchangeable lens capability. So far I haven't looked back and I would like to thank everyone that helped me during my stay here.

James

James I am glad to hear that you are happy with your move, if it works for you that is the most important thing
I would love to hear more about your story and decision making process and what and why you end up buying

Good luck with your new gear but that doesn't mean you have to leave this forum, please keep sharing

Oh, I'm not leaving the forum. Information found here can be applied to any camera. The camera that I bought is the Olympus E-PL2. B&H had a 100.00 instant rebate on them. I really do not see any difference in image quality and the Zuiko 14-42mm lens is actually a tad sharper than my Canon 17-85mm. The camera suffers no lack of features for sure and it will be another learning curve as far as the menu goes. The three inch 460K screen is razor sharp.

As these cameras improve will be interesting to see how much of the DSLR market they convert. I assume for the hobbyist they produce sufficient images. I'd love to see image comparison to a DSLR (I'm sure there is somewhere on the web), would be fun to play with one for a while, probably the perfect back up or quick grab and run camera. Glad you are happy with the results.

It's not going to compete with DSLRs with L lenses, but I really didn't see any difference between my 40D and my non L lenses as far as image quality/sharpness. I wouldn't be surprised to see the DSLRs go mirrorless before too long. From what I read, the micro 4/3rds converted quite a few people over from DSLRs. I am very surprised Canon hasn't released one yet. Nikon recently released their J1 (crappy looking camera) micro 4/3rds and Olympus has been producing them for a few years now along with Sony's NEX series. As for picture quality, take a look here at what others have shot.

Sorry, but two lenses at your old sig are not the best non L lenses in terms of IQ.

I was searching today for couple of hours ago for something price effective for my daughter to take normal HD video with separate audio jack and still pictures at something like 15MP.
Checked prices on some EVILs, they are same price as Rebels, but much more less equipped with limited options for video, expert better AF in video at some of more expensive ones. Checked how much adapter for MF lenses would cost, about the same price as it is for Canon.
I'm just not getting this. Same price, but smaller sensor, no real viewfinder and small selection of lenses, flashes...
Want to take P&S stile pictures with couple of exchangeable lenses?
So be it. But Canon DSLR offers much more in terms of capabilities and IQ.

Yes, I realize this with the 17-85 being my best lens. Hard to believe I sold all my gear within three days. For what I do, three lenses is enough. I plan on getting the 40-150mm next, and down the road the 150-300mm. I am pretty much an amateur, never sold a photo in my life. So for my needs, I'm very happy with the Olympus 4/3rds and I don't have the bulk.

Interesing James.

Nortel learnt a similar lesson the hard way. They were still pumping out $100,000 servers when the worlds largest companies realized that a $10,000 server provided more than they would need for decades. Not the same functionality mind you, but much more than was needed for the forseeable future.

That did not end well for them.

Well, I hope your camera maker of choice is still around in a year (external link). Don't know if they're likely to go under but their digital camera division has been underperforming (they do better with medical equipment). I assume the lenses should still work on other Micro 4/3 cameras, at least.
