Just got a call from a friend wants me to shoot his daughters indoor volly ball game. I'm a outdoor kind of guy. I'm setting my XSi on Manual iso 800, 5.6 and 1/500. will that give me a decent chance of a good shot? oh...with a 55/250 lens.
Thanks..

oh...in about an hour...lol...

If it's High School or below...then prob not. I shot a HS volleyball game last night...my settings were ISO 6400, f/2.8 and SS ranged from 1/500 to 1/800. The best HS gym I shot in was ISO 1600, f/2.8 and ss of 1/800. But at the settings you gave all you'll get is a black image.

You are going to be on the ragged edge of your gears capability. Wide open with that lens and you'll be lucky to get anything at 1/200 of a second in most small gyms. Any chance to rent an 85 1.8 somewhere?

No time, I took some quick shots in my home office, they will be good enough I think. Its her last game so I think the memories will be worth more than the photos. But thanks.

Very slim chance.

Your best option will be to max out ISO (which is ISO 1600 on the XSi), force aperture wide open (which is f/4 at the wide end and f/5.6 at 250mm, so sit close and stay at f/4 if you don't have a faster lens). Shoot RAW to give you more to play with in post processing. You'll need noise reduction when shooting at max ISO.

Hope for shutter speeds of 1/400 or better, which will give you a lot of motion blur on the ball and hands.

With f/1.8 lenses and higher ISO in decently lit gyms, I aim for SS of 1/1000".

Slow down the SS, ramp up the ISO and pay attention to the slower aspects of the game (serve, set, free ball) and you'll probably get a few keepers.

f/5.6 ISO800 indoors? Sounds like a disaster. Would like to see what it produces though.

You can always look at renting a lens and trying it out. There are many places that will overnight the lens and have it in a day or two.

Canon 7D Gripped (2) - T1i Gripped - 70-200 2.8L - Tamron 18-50 2.8 - 18-55 3.5-5.6 - 55-250 4-5.6 - 50 1.8 - Kenko MC7 2x - 430 EX II - Elinchrom Strobes - PW Flex TT5 (2) - PW Mini TT1 w/ AC3
