A lot of new and very high tech features. But I would like to know which pros will use this. I guess the sports guys on the sidelines. But for the price of this camera, you can get a 5D2 and a 7D, the latter of which has a fast burst rate. You might have enough left over for a lens.

I just wonder at what point I would lay out this money. And it's a brick.

I don't have a XTi. I highly doubt this camera will be "game changing". Yes,it has very, very nice features and such. Will it take VERY nice pics? Yes. Will 5 out of 10 people own it? No.
The only people that are going to own it is the true pro's.

I just want all the bs threads to stop. That's all.

bw!

I think about 1/3rd of POTN is some stripe of BS thread to somebody.

I really don't see what the problem is with 18 megapixels on the 1DX camera. It's good enough for both sports and nature and just about anything else you want to shoot. My 7D has that and i can crop freely with it. If the 1DX had more megapixels it would cost far more than it already is.

I have a saying and it goes like this.. "if you don't know how to make use of 18 megapixels, you have no need for more." :)

/ Magnus

18MP on the 7D's crop sensor is not exactly the same as 18MP on a FF sensor.

That said, I have no issues with the 1DX being an 18MP FF body.

I voted indifferent.

By specification it seems well suited if you shoot under 300mm

It would be ideal for my short lens combo--long lens not so much.

I personally think this is a fair question. While the 1DX has some nice improvements, it comes a quite a cost. It seems that ALL cameras have some compromises. So one has to be honest with themselves and ask if the latest technological improvements at such a high price tag are going to produce noticeably better photos. My guess would be no. I have a 1DM4. While it has the ability to take great photos, it is only as good as the person behind it. I can honestly say that I have seen postings with cameras that would be considered far less superior to mine, but the photos are far superior to mine. In retrospect, I think I would have been much better with a 5D2. The extra money could have been used for some lessons, classes, etc. I see so many people on the forum debate the specs of this camera vs. another. What about the persons skill level, their eye for composition and lighting, and their processing skills. To me, that is so much more important than the camera. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not a pro and I'll probably buy one!. I'm disappointed with the 18mp I was hoping to keep it above 21mp I would gladly have gave up the 2fps gain and kept iso range 100-12500 standard mode 104000 max to get higher MP but I still plan on buying one asked the guy at the camera shop i help out at to see when preorders from canon start. I want to go to just 1 camera I'm tired of having 2 that barely get used.

So those of us that do this full time as our living are not allowed to discuss it. Sure there have been a couple of threads started that could have been tagged onto existing ones but that is the way this goes. I acknowledge that there are alot of people that aren't going to be able to afford this but that shouldn't stop them from discussing the camera. I do agree that it may not be a game changer but it you cannot argue with some of the advances that Canon has made. I am convinced enough to have ordered one and enjoy the opinions of both the pro and con camps on this subject. Only time will tell when we start to get production models. Personally I wish that they had kept the separated 1 series bodies but greater minds than ours have decided that for us so we work with what is presented and make sure that Canon knows how we feel.

I think the resolution is quite adequate.

Once you've got past that criterion it comes down to a trade-off. In this case, it's increasing resolution against increasing noise floor. To my mind, Canon nailed this bit. Then you have double CF slots, double joysticks and a 7D-like user interface.... this fixes all my 1D4 gripes.

The backward battery compatibility, a longer shutter life and 1000BaseT is like Belgian chocolate... just pure, wonderful decadence. Video - well it's nice to have but I don't think I really care about it.

I think Canon has created what will be seen as the first do-everything-really-well digital camera. I put down my deposit yesterday.

I'm quite fine with 18mp, matter of fact, I was worried that it would be up in the 28~36mp range. For what I do, I rarely print any bigger than 4 feet by 6 feet, so it's hard to justify the MP when most of my prints are closer to 24x36 inch range. If I really need to go beyond 18 or 21mp, then I'm renting a Medium format body.

I’ve been lugging around three to four bodies for a while, and this 1D – X consolidates MOST of my needs to ONE camera. The only request now is a pro body version of the 7D for when I go birding, the crop is a nice advantage. So if Canon can make "Pro body" with a crop sensor that will allow me to use a 2x TC and can focus at f8, then I will be set for birding.

I would have liked to have seen the sensor at least match the 1D4's pixel density considering it is replacing that body and comes with a huge increase in price.

It's strange that many here prefer high pixel density over wider dynamic range, better high iso performance and lower shadow noise.
I hope Canon will use that sensor in the 5D mkIII

I work in Video Post (I'm a colorist). When it comes to shooting digital, the two cameras of choice now are the Red Epic and the Arri Alexa. The Red is capable of shooting higher resolution files than the Alexa, but the Alexa takes a monumental dump on the Red, when it comes to dynamic range and all round "Filmic" aesthetic (Ask Roger Deakins and most other DP's for that matter). I would rather color a pro-res from an Alexa than a 4K Red file (Granted the pro-res originates from a 2K Arri raw file)
My point is this. Just because a camera shoots higher resolution images, doesn't mean that said images are higher in IQ.
I understand the frustration of the f8 focus issues by certain shooters, but when it comes to overall IQ, I have a feeling the 1DX is going to be extremely impressive.

It will be interesting to see if this causes any kind of uptick in the sales of the "entry level" medium format cameras. Considering that the cost of getting into the medium format game is now blow $10,000 it is very enticing. There is still a very large contingent of photographers that have no interest in shooting video but due want the best still image quality possible. As great as the 1DX seems I do think my next purchase will be MF I can't be the only one who was a MF film shooter that still has the lenses and would love to get back to MF.
