I think the 18mp actually helps it get 12/14fps. If they made it 30mp you'd get like 9-10fps.

It will be interesting to see if this causes any kind of uptick in the sales of the "entry level" medium format cameras. Considering that the cost of getting into the medium format game is now blow $10,000 it is very enticing. There is still a very large contingent of photographers that have no interest in shooting video but due want the best still image quality possible. As great as the 1DX seems I do think my next purchase will be MF I can't be the only one who was a MF film shooter that still has the lenses and would love to get back to MF.

Do MF cameras have all the fast focus and fps virtues of the 1DX?

No they don't, what they do have is larger sensors, better image quality and wider dynamic range and leaf shutter lenses that can flash sync an 8000th. My comment was not meant to be a knock on the 1DX but simply a thought based on the OP's question about the lowering of the pixel count. In the end it is a matter of picking the best tool for what you do.

...i kid. It's not really that big of a deal. If you're a good photographer you'll make do with the technology you have in your hands until you can afford to upgrade.

I work in Video Post (I'm a colorist). When it comes to shooting digital, the two cameras of choice now are the Red Epic and the Arri Alexa. The Red is capable of shooting higher resolution files than the Alexa, but the Alexa takes a monumental dump on the Red, when it comes to dynamic range and all round "Filmic" aesthetic (Ask Roger Deakins and most other DP's for that matter). I would rather color a pro-res from an Alexa than a 4K Red file (Granted the pro-res originates from a 2K Arri raw file)
My point is this. Just because a camera shoots higher resolution images, doesn't mean that said images are higher in IQ.
I understand the frustration of the f8 focus issues by certain shooters, but when it comes to overall IQ, I have a feeling the 1DX is going to be extremely impressive.

It seems that is Canon's point as well.

I cannot wait for this new camera to become available.

It's funny, a few years ago before the 1Ds3 and the 5D2 came out, some of us who were happily shooting with the 5D Classic would chat a bit about what we would like to see in the next full frame sensor.

My take was that I'd love it if Canon put out a 16MP ff sensor that totally "owned" the High ISO/low noise realm, but I figured they would go for more MegaPixels and give up some on the potential IQ gains.

Well, the rest has been history with the 1Ds3 and 5D2...

But now, this new 1DX, well, it's a whole new ball game. If it lives up to its potential, well, it sounds like an IQ "game winner".

Now, who would have use of all its qualities?

I think of photojournalists, event shooters, street photographers as photogs who have to grapple with all kinds of conditions and who will favor a body that can take whatever you throw at it and will have the high performance as well as the low-light capabilities.

Of course, the fact that it could "second" as a good sports body (given the right lenses) is a big plus, although I can imagine that many sports shooters could prefer sticking to something like the 1D4 (or maybe the 7D for a more compact size). I'd think the same for bird/wildlife shooting.

Now, one interesting bit of speculation will be about the 5D3. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Canon sticks to the high resolution model, with the incremental gains in IQ (and hopefully improved AF). In that case, I'd imagine that the 5D3 would be the go-to camera for landscape/scenic photographers, and for a more compact general-use body...

Higher pixel count is not tied to increased noise or decreased DR. It is actually beneficial because, beyond increasing resolution (obviously) and allowing more cropping headroom, higher pixel density "burns through" diffraction and also fights digital artifacting like moiré. With a high enough density, an AA filter is no longer needed.

I don't see a problem with 18 MP, except for the fact that it's supposed to replace the 1DsIII. 1DsIII users care about resolution.
