I think the 18mp actually helps it get 12/14fps. If they made it 30mp you'd get like 9-10fps.

Considering that the cost of getting into the medium format game is now blow $10,000 it is very enticing. There is still a very large contingent of photographers that have no interest in shooting video but due want the best still image quality possible. As great as the 1DX seems I do think my next purchase will be MF I can't be the only one who was a MF film shooter that still has the lenses and would love to get back to MF. Do MF cameras have all the fast focus and fps virtues of the 1DX? Jay

No they don't, what they do have is larger sensors, better image quality and wider dynamic range and leaf shutter lenses that can flash sync an 8000th. My comment was not meant to be a knock on the 1DX but simply a thought based on the OP's question about the lowering of the pixel count. In the end it is a matter of picking the best tool for what you do. Canon EOS 40D,30D, Canon 70-200 2.8L, 24-70 2.8L, 85 1.8, Canon extension tube, Elinchrom Lighting gear,

When it comes to shooting digital, the two cameras of choice now are the Red Epic and the Arri Alexa. The Red is capable of shooting higher resolution files than the Alexa, but the Alexa takes a monumental dump on the Red, when it comes to dynamic range and all round "Filmic" aesthetic (Ask Roger Deakins and most other DP's for that matter). I would rather color a pro-res from an Alexa than a 4K Red file (Granted the pro-res originates from a 2K Arri raw file) My point is this. Just because a camera shoots higher resolution images, doesn't mean that said images are higher in IQ. I understand the frustration of the f8 focus issues by certain shooters, but when it comes to overall IQ, I have a feeling the 1DX is going to be extremely impressive. It seems that is Canon's point as well.

It is actually beneficial because, beyond increasing resolution (obviously) and allowing more cropping headroom, higher pixel density "burns through" diffraction and also fights digital artifacting like moiré. With a high enough density, an AA filter is no longer needed.
