-takes a deep breath-

Whenever i see people complaining about the "guaranteed $10" stuff and that and IMMEDIATELY going to the argument of "WELL I CANT AFFORD NEW GAMES SO THEY SHOULD MAKE THEM CHEAPER" I sigh and die a bit inside, The fact is, games are a luxury item, You pay what they're priced because they're a luxury item, ie, not a necessity, Saying they should be cheaper because you cant afford them is not a legi...timate argument for any form of luxury item, its like going to a BMW dealer and screaming that you can only afford $5000 so a brand new 3 series should be $5000, it just doesnt work that way...

Also the game companies have no reason to offer someone whos buying a game used the same experience as someone who buys the game new, you know why? Because those people havn't given the game developers and publishers one shiny dime when they buy it used from Gamestop or rent it from Gamefly, Why are they obligated to provide the same experience down the line? Is GM obligated to make sure a 5 year old car runs -exactly- like a brand new one? No they are not, Once something is used it is inherently less valuable than when it was new because its used, This is why something that is used depreciates in monetary value...

Games cost a lot of money to produce these days, its a fact, the fact that gaming has become mainstream is why games ONLY cost about $65 new instead of $80, $90 or even $100 a pop, I had a few ads sitting around here somewhere from the early 90s advertising Electronics Boutique and showing Genesis, SNES and PC games for $40-60 in early 1990s dollars, Heres a fact, adjusted for inflation thats more like $90-100 these days, and back then, gaming was nowhere near the huge industry it is today, Consoles still cost $300-400 back then too...So stop for a moment and consider that....

I'm not trying to be "insensitive" to people who do not have a lot of money but the fact is again, Gaming is a luxury, not a need or a necessity, if you cannot afford it, you do not buy it, or you buy what you can afford, the fact is that Used game sales have cut HEAVILY into the profitability of developers and publishers and sadly, profitability does indeed matter, the Guaranteed $10 program is just a way that they're trying to counter the losses caused by used game sales in a way that is NOT basically including a one-use CD key for the ENTIRE GAME like they started to do with PC Games about 15 years ago, Thats why there ARE no ways to get used PC Games these days, because CD Keys made that a very difficult thing (As someone could copy the disc and write the CD key down and that..)

There was an article recently with the people who did Heavy Rain saying that they sold something like 2 million copies of the game, but knew that 3 million people played it, They calculated that used gaming cost them between 6.8 and 13.6 million dollars because of this, Thats a pretty hefty sum of money and considering your AVERAGE game for a PS3/360 release costs between 20-30 million to make well...That means that Heavy Rain possibly BARELY broke even when you consider advertising costs and that.....

So at the end of the day, why should the developers and publishers, who by the way arent really terribly "wealthy" (Most folks in the game industry are NOT making a 6 figure income and because of where some of these studios are, are likely not terribly well off in terms of luxuries either because of high costs of living) and whos jobs and livelihood depend on these games selling to customers and making a profit care about the experience of someone who has paid them exactly $0 at the end of the day, The fact is, they shouldnt, for you're not technically their customer, You are Gamefly or Gamestop's customers, Not theirs, They want you to be THEIR customer and the way you become their customer is that you care enough about game X to buy it new, Not used, and not rented, or you pay to get the key to unlock the content you care about

I think the fact so many people are angry about it proves that the strategy is working, Because if people didnt care about the content they're not getting when they rent the game or buy it used, then they wouldnt be mad about it...

I'm right here XD and to follow up my long post..

FYI, I do have a solution to both fronts, Simply have publishers/developers utilize a digital distribution business model (like they have on the PC) and charge Used-game prices for the digital copy versus the hard physical copy, This way people who cannot afford new games actually could, while reducing the costs for the publisher (because they dont have to ship and produce physical product, which while is only a small cost of business, its still a cost) Add perceived value to the digital copy by perhaps releasing it a week earlier than the physical copy or other various things

Since digital distribution isnt able to be resold the publishers get to accomplish their final task in a way that doesnt make some customers feel (unjustifiably) screwed

Just laying on the sofa, Alexander is asleep on my chest, I am working on my laptop :). Could not get any better right now. Even have bacon in the fridge, so I can foresee a bacon in a bap for breakfast!
