Hi there!

I am volunteering for a fundraiser breakfast with santa.. And they said that what they want is for me print right after taking a pic.. So say, family#1.. take pic.. print.. then work on family#2.. and so on.. No time for editing whatsoever.. since there will be 100 pictures to be taken in an hour!

I've never done this.. "mall type" photography! Lol..

I do have a laptop I can use, but no idea how to connect my camera (5d2).. to my computer without physically taking my flash card.. Oh, there is somebody to help in printing.. So, really I just need a solution of transfering pics straight from my cam to puter!

Thanks in advance!

T

If you look up tethered shooting you will find lots of information (here and elsewhere) on how to do it. There are lots of programs of which you may already have one of them such as Lightroom. I've done the same kind of shooting that you are describing and it works quite well with at least two people. In fact I don't know how you could do it by yourself if there is a steady stream of people waiting to have their picture taken.

Get set up early and find the right exposure. You set your camera accordingly and then you don't change it. Shoot JPG. In the short time it takes to reach your laptop the second person can be sending to the printer. If you get the settings right you won't need to do post editing and this kind of mass production shooting usually doesn't call for it either. It is sort of WYSIWYG photography.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I'm no expert but I guess the easiest way would be to use 2 cards - shoot 5-10 families, swap cards and while you're shooting the next 5-10 the other person could possibly do a quick edit before printing.

Enjoy

Canon supply everything you need for teathering and printing with EOS Utility and DPP.

Connect camera to computer via USB cable, fire up EOS UTILITY and it should connect.

Make sure EOS UTILITY downloads the images as they are taken and set DPP to watch the folder so that images appear automatically.

As has been said, get a lighting setup that overpowers the ambient light so you don't have to worry about this changing throughout the day and just get on with it. I'd suggest 2 shots per customer (just to allow for people blinking) and the assistant chooses the best and prints.

My eye-fi 8G x2 pro works in a CF adapter. It'd be better in a crop that supports SD - I've had a few random problems with the CF adapter- but it does work most of the time.

If you have access to a camera with a CF slot- it'd be worth considering.

Tethering. I've tethered my 7D and T1i to a computer using a 12 ft usb extension and a 5 ft usb cord.. Yep- about 17 feet. No problems. If the computer is relatively close- I'd tether it this way.

When I had problems with the Eye-Fi and the CF adapter- I lost a few pictures- that I knew I took- just gone.. Most of the time it worked.

By the way: I hope you have a fast Dye-sub printer…

The advantage of using the Canon EOS Utilities software is that you can use Live View to make sure you get a good composition before taking the shot, so fewer repeats.

I just volunteered today for a similar charity event. What lighting setup are you going to use for the Santa pictures? All I have is one speedlight, stand, and softbox.
