I'm looking to use my Metz flash gun (45 CL-4) with mt Canon 20D, I just returned fom my local camera shop which ordered me the SCA-3102 adapter. But I found out I need the SCA 3000 C Converting cable (external link) also, I' confused... to me it looks like I can just use the 3000 C cable (see the thumbnail)?

I have the 20D, the SCA-3102, and the 45CL4. Putting the 3102 onto the SCA-300C will allow you to TRIGGER the flash without a PC cord, and will provide some feedback such as the in-finder flash ready light. It will really only work in Auto or one of the Manual full/fractional power settings on the 45CL, it will NOT WORK correctly on TTL setting of the flash!!! The problem is that Canon ETTL expects to cause the flash to do a pre-flash pulse so that it can read the light and then tell the flash how much light to out out. Since there is no pre-flash, your exposures will be horribly underexposed. Use AUTO and you have the exceedingly reliable and predictable Metz flash output (even without TTL control). Use ETTL with an ETTL flash, and you are likely to suffer thru the frustrations of learning how Canon ETTL is designed by the engineers to work, but which is terribly documented!

My friends use Metz Lights with thier cameras, they use the 10D, 20D, and now the 5D.
I can get some info on thier setup next week when they get back in town and ask about the settings that they use.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking to use a PC cord when attached to the camera and not remotely, with TTL I was told that this could be done.
Wilt does the 3000 C adapter allow me to connect the flash to the camera with a PC cord?
Thanks

Mark,

A) the SCA3000C uses the 3102 as its foot, and the foot goes into the hotshoe. The 3000C+3102 provides the signal that displays the Flash Ready light in the viewfinder, and it provides the synch between the shutter and the flash. You do not use the PC cord if you have this.

b) If you use the PC cord you use NO 3000C and NO 3102 at all. you get no in-finder flash ready indicator, you only get the synch to the shutter via the PC cord.

So your choice, A or B. In NEITHER case can you set the 45CL to 'TTL' on the flash unit. It must be Auto, M, M/2, M/4, etc.
