But do I get Rev. I or Rev. II? What are the major differences? AF speed isn't a big deal I shoot mostly portraits in that FL. I like that the II is still covered under warranty and uses the newer focusing mechanism, which is one of the reasons I'm leaning toward the II since the mechanism in the I is based on the discontinued 50 1.0L

I've been using L zooms on my EOS but my Nikon system is all primes and I find myself grabbing for the Nikkor 85 1.8 pre-AI when I slap my adapter on the 5D.

Don't need the AF speed, go with version I. The II was a a wonderful lens.

There is no reason to get the Version I other than financial.

There is a $150 instant rebate on the 85L, I think it just started today...if you needed more reason to buy it :)

All of the retailers should already have this reflected in their price (b&h, adorama, amazon, etc.)

all of these rebates are bogus. This lens was the exact same price before the "rebate" was applied. I hate how cannon ups the price and then puts a rebate to make you think you are getting a better deal. I just bought this lens last week for the same price as it is today. What a marketing gimmick.

i have the version 1 and a buddy of mine has the version 2. both on 5d2's af speed was almost exactly the same... for some reason mine was a bit faster but then again I've had the AF motor replaced in my version 1.

besides a $500+ price difference if bought used and a 700-800 price difference new, the biggest thing I've noticed is how it handles flare wide open. the version 1 has god awful flare control. the version 2 still flares but its more pleasant... like a haze. my version one leaves little light artifacts and rings in pics.

all else seems the same

There is no reason to get the Version I or Version 2 over the Sigma 85 other than L lust.

Fix'd. Though really I advise you to check out the Sigma 85 and the comparisons between it and the 85L.
