Thanks guys. If you nail the exposure, ISO3200 doesn't really need any noise reduction, other than what Adobe Camera Raw does in conversion.
If I underexposed I will often use a mild amount of Ninja.

Lisa, no it's not IS.
IS doesn't help in this type of shooting. You need at least 1/320s exposures to freeze the subject (or higher) in most sports, so IS would just be unwanted weight and $$$.
Also, the non-IS is supposed to have better resolution than the IS version, at least on paper anyway.
Thanks for your compliment too.

thanks for the reply. the lens im looking at is non IS too. hockey and skating is really what i want it for, i have the hugest hockey fan here and im sure that all his waking at 4:30 -5:00 am is just priming me for practices to come. I think I'm going to go for the non IS and use the extra $$$ to get the Tamron 28-75. lol. Can't wait to see more of your pictures!

I've never attempted to shoot hockey and can only imagine the difficulties it presents -- white ice, low light, and very fast action. You've cleared those hurdles by great distances -- good stuff!

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

lisa, the IS version is great too, but for certain types of shooting, like what I do, IS would not be of much benefit. So, I can sleep soundly at night never wondering if I should spend the extra money and get the IS version.
FSLshooter, thank you very much, and yes, hockey can be difficult. I think I've got the technical part down, now I have to improve the subject matter and try to get some more interesting shots.
