Racers from around the U.S. and the world pay for the privilege of racing through Midwestern mud, forests and cornfields in the Ironman race sanctioned by Grand National Cross Country. Spectators pay for the privilege of gathering at the race's hill climbs, grabbing riders who slide to a stop in the mud and pulling them to the top.
