I just installed PSE from the Mac App Store. When I click edit in it says there are no external editors selected. When I click preferences, PSE is not listed anywhere.

I suspect that, as it appears you have installed PSE after you installed LR3.5, that you probably have to tell LR where to find the PSE application. If you had PSE installed when you installed LR, then LR would have checked for things like PSE, but it would appear that PSE does not check for LR when it is installed. Make sense? HTH.

Cheers,

Yeah, but the problem is LR works natively with other Adobe editing apps like PSE and PS. If I "tell it where it is" I might as well be using any third party editing app. It should "detect" PSE. I had this problem previously under Windows (I have a Mac now) but have NO IDEA how I got around it. Not sure if I did a complete uninstall of both apps (not looking forward to that) or what.

Now I am confused - you stated originally that I just installed PSE from the Mac App Store. When I click edit in it says there are no external editors selected. When I click preferences, PSE is not listed anywhere. Now you are telling me that LR works natively with other Adobe apps like PSE and PS. So in your case, please help me understand - either PSE is working with LR or it isn't - maybe I don't understand what you mean by natively.

I believe that if PSE or PS is already installed when you install Lightroom, then Lightroom will recognize that they exist. If you install either of them after you have installed LR, then LR is not currently "smart enough" to recognize their existence. The only other thing I can think of, and I am not sure if this applies to Macs, but in Windows, to be able to have LR talk to PSE, it has to be installed as a 32 bit app, because PSE is a 32 bit app. If LR is installed as a 64 bit app, then the two will not communicate properly, at least that is my understanding.

You are right when you say that I might as well be using any third party editing app, because that is what happens in the case of some third party apps, you have to tell LR where they are, although some are getting smarter with each new upgrade.

If you help me clear up my confusion, then maybe there is a better solution than the one I am suggesting. HTH.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

Got to Edit/Preferences. In the dialog click the External Editing tab. Then, in the Additional External Editor panel, pick Choose, then browse to your Elements installation.
