Hi
Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. My 3month old 7D has developed a discrete ring in the viewfinder. It is not part of the LCD display as it is there if the camera is on or off. It is centrally located and has a diameter just greater than the lateral AF points. It is too regular to be an artifact or a foreign body on the viewscreen.

Anyone seen this?
Help?

It's not a spot metering circle is it?

No Mike, thanks anyway... It is wider than that, has no black line and appeared for the first time yesterday after more than 5000 shots on the body....

When you say a diameter just greater than the lateral AF points, do you mean it is outside all of the horizontal AF points (meaning a pretty big circle)? If not, please explain what you do mean. Also, you need to update your sig. :)

Did you take your lens off and check for a spot of some sort on the mirror?

I can see the circle on the viewfinder screen, but it appears to be part of the screen...

Not sure if I am allowed to do this or not, but I have a query out on dpreview forums too with images... here is the link to have a look...

You should also also post the photos in this thread.

I have never seen anything like that on my 7D. The fact that it is still visible with the camera off seems very strange.

The ring is not perfectly concentric with the focus points. Also strange.

Did you buy your camera used? Not an expert but it looks like a 3rd party focus screen:

Hello mike, without a pic i just can suppose two things...the first one could be a circle of moisture condensation (when you go from a cold temperature, eg air conditioned, to a warm or hot temperature, eg outside a room.
And the second one it could be fungus...but i'm pretty sure that is the case one.

Never seen anything like that. I'd be tempted to have the Canon kids take a look at it, myself; it may be completely benign, but it is certainly out of the ordinary...

Is the circle there when you remove the battery... If so, then I'm guessing the transmissive LCD focus screen has become discolored somehow... I have no idea how it could happen.

Why and how do you guess at these two causes?
How do you account for the circle being there all the time - surely if it were moisture from condensation it would vanish as the camera attained room temperature.
Do you have personal experience of 'fairy rings' of fungus in viewfinders,

The first is pure supposition.
The second is just alarmist...............

Hi Jim. Yes, the circle is still there even with the battery out - it is duller, along with the rest of the focus screen.
I think discoloration is unlikely as it was an instantaneous thing. Had camera outside, shooting, and changed lenses and boom, there it was. Weird hey?

Seems like it is going to be going to Canon to have a look see.. There have been other threads about this, going back to 2005 and 40D's but no resolution to any of them either.

Hm... I almost feel like I saw this on my 7D recently.

What meter mode and focus point are you in?
