Mike,

Did you ever get a resolution to this? I am also having the same issue. My 7D was purchased new in April 2012. Just last week I started noticing the ring in the viewfinder, although I only have the left half of the ring visible.

Thanks, Sandy

A near perfect circle makes me think it is supposed to be there. Could it be something not readily apparent if the diopter adjustment is out of calibration to the user's eye?

Try putting the original focus screen back in. See what happens. The circle is to large and to linear to be dust or a water spot.

Mike

The 7d screen is not user replaceable as it's a "Transmissive LCD screen" so you can't change in an out other focusing screens in as with other canon bodies.

The larger outer ring is not standard with the 7D, only the spot metering ring should be showing up.
I suspect it's a fault developing with the transmissive LCD screen, so Canon service would be the only way to get it resolved.

Iannes, the screen is replaceable, Canon just doesn't want you to know about it. This thread discusses the changes and ramifications.

The site http://www.focusingscreen.com …_info.php?products_id=902 (external link) shows several types of focusing screens available.

The site http://www.focusingscreen.com/work/7den.htm (external link) has the step by step procedure on how to change. Interesting that on page 8 of this link a comment is made "This is K3 focusing screen for Canon EOS 7D camera". See the large but faint circle, amazingly similar to what the OP had appear suddenly

I see it on my 5DII. I did change my focus screen though, but I don't think it is 3rd party. It's somewhat subtle and I only really notice it in certain light.

Since it is so large and obviously regular and not in images I basically dismissed it as 'one of those things'.

The dust in my viewfinder bugs me more.
