I waas wondering if anyone could recommend a small external flash to use with the G6. I would like a little more power than what is put out by the internal flash.

Thanks

Your 580ex will work fine. I use a 420ex. If you use an off brand you probably won't have ETTL.

I just purchased the 430EX due to lens adapter shadow and it's great. 430EX is way faster than a 420 series. .

NOTE: 430EX and 580EX autofocus assist LED are not compatible with G6, I did confirm this at HENRY's store .

But what about the G5? Several times I have borrowed a 580EX to go with my G5 (yes, I know! The rig looks a liiiiiittle bit unbalanced : - ). I shot about 400 pictures this weekend at a dance competition and I would be very surprised if the flash autofocus assist LED didn't help the G5 focus. I don't think it would manage to focus without it, considering the light and distance.

You sure it was assist light from the coming form the flash not from the camera?

No, I can't say that I'm sure. But considering how problematic focusing can be in low light conditions with the G5, I felt that it must have had some help from the flash.

Yes you right, but in this situation nothing you can do as to use additional small torch (flash-light) to help focusing as I red somewhere that advice.
Really not be a problem to use internal, camera LED assist, but if you use adapters, convertors - this is a problem. Convertor block the focusing light and focus assist light does not work in EX flashes with G cameras. It will be nice to use teleconvertor with external flash, but you will have no focusing assistance for the low light condition unfortunately. Could be a good decision to go to hiperfocal for that situation. I had that programmed C1 and C2
