LCD Screen Protectors

When I bought my 50D (bought it used) it came with one of those Giotto screen protectors. Unfortunately, the protector protected the screen yesterday. Was taking the camera out of my bag and bumped it (barely) on the corner of a plastic (yes, plastic) chair. Shattered the protector.

I'm thinking the protector is a good idea but this one gave up the ghost a bit prematurely if you ask me. When I say I barely hit it I mean I BARELY hit it and it shattered.

So I'm looking for something better. What do you all use (if anything) to protect your LCD?

Thanks.

I don't use one on either of my dslr's screens. If I ever put one on, I would use 'Invisible Shield' by Zagg. I have used them on gps receivers and smart phones and they are great.

I use a GGS on my 7d... I broke one, but it took a hit with a packing tape gun to do that... multi layered plastic and glass... it's hard-core.

I'm happy with the standard plastic protectors that are fitted to the camera when you get it. They are pretty cheap and easily user replaceable, they are also quite tough, I have "tested" mine on several occasions and they have always shrugged impacts off with no damage. Some of the aftermarket protectors I have seen people recommending in the past, cost more than the protector they are protecting. Never seen the logic in spending $20 to protect a $15 part.

I believe the 7D is a different matter, as it uses a more expensive glass protector as standard.

NO Canon DSLR LCD display is exposed to where the camera user can touch the display. ALL of them have very tough protectors over the LCD display right from the factory. In my opinion, it's both silly and a waste of money to put a "protector" over a "protector".

Click on this link for a procedure to replace the 50D LCD protector if you manage to damage it somehow.

Except the 7d... where you can't replace the "cover" without replacing the entire LCD....

In any case.. it's easier to replace an aftermarket screen protector than the LCD protector put in place by Canon.... nice, thick, multi-layered GGS protectors are $2.00 each.... how much is it to replace the LCD cover on a 50D? I know on a 7d, it's +$100 ... I think even on the 40D, 50D's it's $25 or so.... hmmm $2.00 or $25?

Just sounds like you hit the screen protector in just the wrong spot. Nothing you could do about it and maybe something that would never happen again for as long as you own the camera.

Don't worry about too much and just enjoy using your camera.

Lexerd is what I use... just thin plastic sheeting to guard against scratches... I don't think I'll be shattering my LCD.

Hoodman (external link) makes a reasonably-priced collection of screen protectors.

actually it is $15

On top of that there is going to be a film over your screen so out in the sun it might effect how it looks. also you have to worry about installing it straight which i know alot of people have a hard time doing, including myself. I personally like that there is a way to change out the screen rather than futz with those stupid films. By the looks of the link posted to change out the protector screen, it looks easier and quicker than taking the ZAGG route.

Actually, it's $3.10 for theGGS (external link) I was talking about. I said nothing about a ZAGG cover. If you're going to try to correct and or quote someone, make sure you understand what that person was talking about.

And it's not a film. It's plastic and glass. On the LCD of my 7D, it makes no difference in IQ on the LCD, and it actually reduces glare.

OP, I use this protector and have experience with it. I wouldn't worry about listening to people who are just postulating on what "might" happen or what the screen protectors "may" do.

Whatever, i was off by what? 3 words and $11.90?

Point is why would you cover up the LCD screen with a protector when there is already a protector and it can be changed out for a small price if it does break.

I know the back of a 50D or 5D isn't exactly presentation quality but still. I agree with SkipD "In my opinion, it's both silly and a waste of money to put a "protector" over a "protector"." How many people you heard of cracking the screen on the back? I have heard of few.

And you mentioned a 7D doesn't have that option but the OP has a 50D and he does have that option to change the window.

I just turn the LCD in... ;)

What are you trying to protect from? Just scratches, or scratches + impact? Those zagg and other flexible material ones will protect from scratches but NOT impact as they are flexible and still transfer the kinetic energy right into the glass.
