Im just getting started with using strobes and what not but I am curious on how to get this lighting style, I love how the light looks like circles as it thins out.

Looks like Jongs work. Afaik he just uses a Beauty Dish directly in front of the subject. Purely 1 light and a beauty dish.

Beauty dish might be to diffused for that, Its pretty sharp shadows I would say snoot, that would give you the reach.

There are at least TWO light sources superimposed...one can clearly see two shadow edges from the model's right hand!

Not necessarily, Wilt. You can get that with a regular reflector or with a BD with a solid deflector where the effect is more pronounced.

I'd really like to see such a double-shadow shot, as well as a photo of the equipment that does that, knowingly made via a single light source! I might not be from the show-me state, but on this point I remain skeptical.

Here's a thread where this was discussed at length.

Check out any of El Jong's work on the G&N forum. This is basically his signature and he's mentioned many times that he uses solely a single beauty dish.

Thanks for that link, Leo. While the thread does show double shadow, the earlier link http://farm7.static.flickr.com …20159856_b03fd37c21_b.jpg (external link) shows a considerable offset between the two shadows, as opposed to a small fraction of an inch offset.

Oh, Wilt, ye of little faith! You do know that you will go straight to hell for being a non-believer, don't you? ;) :p

Here you go. A sample shot taken with a gridded Speedotron BD, Eli 600RX and the silver deflector (I removed the stock translucent deflector) to demonstrate the effect. What say ye now, skeptic? Or do I also need to show you the setup shot? ;)

OK, Leo, count me in as one of the faithful! What can you do with a loaf of bread and a fish?

If the fish is a tuna, I can make tuna salad sandwiches. :D
But if you had rice instead of bread, I could make you some mean sushi. Wasabe, anyone?

I guess here in CA we would expect a Torta de Pescado, with a loaf and a fish. I would have thought that you might offer a Philadelphia Cheese Fish sandwich. Maguro sushi is a nice alternative!
