I had a Viewsonic connected by a VGA cable but I

finally upgraded my monitor to a 27" Planar LCD

What is the best connection method

DVI

HDMI

etc.

I have the main cpu about 12 feet from the monitor so I be getting a longer cable, are their disadvantages with longer runs for the digital cables?

TIA

Either HDMI or DVI, they carry the same video signal(I prefer DVI because it is more robust)

There are adapters for both HDMI<-->DVI and for DVI<-->VGA available. For example http://www.monoprice.com ….asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419 (external link)

Look at your owner manual for your brand/model monitor to determine what signal inputs it has. You need to adapt the video signal connector coming out from the back of your PC, to match your monitor input.

1. DisplayPort
2. DVI
3. HDMI

That's my order of preference. If you are pulling Audio as well then #'s 2 & 3 switch.

The OP only has VGA output out the back of his PC, so an adapter is needed, or the ability remove the VGA video output card and install a suitable replacement video card with newer output types.

He didn't say that, at least not in this thread. He said that his previous screen was connected via VGA, not that that was all he could use. The fact that he is asking about digital connections implies that something other than VGA is available.

He said "I finally upgraded my monitor" and not "I finally upgraded my PC", so the assumption is that he is wondering about connecting the new monitor to an old PC. But admittedly, he just might have upgraded both. Up to the OP to respond and clarify his situation!

I guess I should have given more detail.

I upgraded everything cpu with high end card and the 27 monitor.

I was asking because I currently using 2 cpu connected with a KVM VGA switch. I new I was behind the time still using the VGA connector for the monitor but because of the KVM switch I was hesitant to change it for a digital KVM switch.

My new setup will be just the single new cpu with a high end video card and the new 27 LCD monitor.

I picked up a 15 foot DVI cable so I can keep the cpu away from my desk in my current office setup.

I also pickuped the Logitech wireless back-lit keyboard on for $60.

http://slickdeals.net …-keyboard-k800-dented-box (external link)

I use the pen on my wacom 95% of the time for mousing. Although I may look at a Lagitech wireless mouse because using the wacom mouse and the pen at the same time is a pain because you have to take the mouse off the tablet to get the pen to work.

What do you think of the K800? I was considering buying one to go with my Performance MX mouse since both can share that unifying receiver and I can free up a USB port.

EDIT: Hey, does that keyboard work in your BIOS or do you need to be in Windows?

keyboard get delivered tomorrow, Friday.

I'm looking forward to using it - I've been looking at the Performance mouse, but I generally use a mouse very little, I use a wacom tablet and the pen 95 percent of the time.

Make sure the DVI cable is DUAL LINK which increases video bandwidth or you will get banding especially on a larger screen.

Thanks for the info on the Dual Link

Does the "Dual Link" have the extra rows of pins in the cable connection?

The 15' cable I got was from Flea Bay - only $20 so it's not a deal breaker if I purchased a non dual link. I'll just upgrade to the dual link.

belkin has a kvm that supports dual link DVI connections. Problem is your gonna need a card oto support it.

My U2711 IPS panel requires a dual link cable that dell provides. It you have a single link your not gonna be able to support the native resolution.
