I always used a couple of aftermarket batteries on my 400D to supplement the original Canon battery and the aftermarket items seemed just as good as the original one.

Now I've recently upgraded to a 7D and I will need to buy at least one extra battery. Is there any compelling reason why I shouldn't buy aftermarket batteries for the 7D?

I've never had a problem with SterlingTek's batteries...and I've had several of them for my 20D. Too bad they don't make replacements for the NP-E3.

You dropped over a grand on a camera body but can't spend $45 on genuine Canon batteries? The sole electrical power source for your camera.

At least that's how I feel.

I picked up a Pearstone brand 'LP-E6' to go along with the OEM battery for my battery grip. It reports all battery info just like the OEM and have had zero issues since day 1.

I have a Delkin I purchased from my local photography store of choice. Probably doesn't hold a charge as well as the Canon, but it was less expensive, so I'm okay with that. As a pure hobbyist, I haven't had any issues with it.

Except that in my part of the world, it doesn't cost $45. It cost an equivalent of $80.

Ok, so you probably spent more on your camera as well.

The point still stands. There have been enough people that have had bad luck with 3rd party batteries that a ton of people refuse to use them (and Canon won't warranty damage to your camera if they believe it was caused by a 3rd party battery).

I did spend money on a second OEM battery (for the grip).

I also spent money on another 2 aftermarket batteries as backup and since been very happy with them (Weiss Technologies (external link))

I suppose you refuse to put a Sear's Diehard in your car when your Ford came with a cheap OEM Motorcraft? Sorry to burst the bubble, but when my Sterlingteks outperform the OEM Canons.....I know what is going in my camera. Do you only use Canon lenses too?

After reading several positive things I took a chance on the SterlingTek batteries. They DO work well. In fact, one is sitting in my 7D right now. But... I also ordered THEIR charger. I experimented with trying to charge my Canon batteries in the SterlingTek charger and vice versa. Neither seemed to charge fully in the other charger even though both reported a full charge on the chargers. I can't quite understand why. But a ST battery showing a full change on the Canon charger would report around 85% charge in the camera. SO I just charge the ST batteries in the ST charger and the Canon batteries in the Canon charger. TWO ST batteries AND the ST charger ran me about $65.00, delivered. The price of one Canon battery. So there you go.

Yes Canon only lenses for me. That I will not budge on. Canon batteries provide enough juice for me so I see no reason in changing that either.

I'm actually planning on getting a Diehard Platinum battery for my car because it's a re-badged Odyssey.

Why does everyone drop this line? It's getting old. Yes you can find respectable 3rd party batteries. I use one and it performs just as well as the OEM. Please post a link where you can purchase an LP-E6 for $45.

The exploding battery stories are getting old as well.
