I think a lot depends on what you will use the lens for. I use my 100-400 for my dog photography, as I need to be able to zoom, but my prime is my birding lens, as I am rarely close enough to overfill the frame. Boats are a lot larger than birds, so you might find it a bit restrictive not being able to zoom. (unless your boats are a long way off)
That is so true!
Offshore Power boating, really requires zoom, since you generally can not 'move your
feet' to get closer. When on a turn boat, or the beach, you need variable reach, similar to
conditions at an air show.
The more I play with this lens, the more I think it is the right one for me, down the road.
Here is one from a SBI National event this past July, the Super Stock class
shot with my 18-200, at 200mm. I really need the additional reach.
