Pelican, with an attitude

This lens arrived today, and I am having a good time with it. Here is a pelican out over the river.

Shot with 7D | Zeikos ZE-CBG7D grip | EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
all shot at 400mm, and extensive cropped

lol, I love pelicans, and your variety is different to ours.To follow on from your other post, these are still suffering from cropping. You don't have to fill a frame full with the bird. Same comment as for the gull, don't crop so hard, and your images will look better. Glad you are enjoying your new lens.

Yes, it is easy to go crazy with cropping, next time will be better, thanks for the

The lens is a rental. Not quite in my budget yet, want to be sure it is the correct
lens for what I shoot, and I have a big race boat event this Sat.
Hurricane Rita, or what is left of her, may cancel the event.

I think a lot depends on what you will use the lens for. I use my 100-400 for my dog photography, as I need to be able to zoom, but my prime is my birding lens, as I am rarely close enough to overfill the frame. Boats are a lot larger than birds, so you might find it a bit restrictive not being able to zoom. (unless your boats are a long way off)

That is so true!

Offshore Power boating, really requires zoom, since you generally can not 'move your
feet' to get closer. When on a turn boat, or the beach, you need variable reach, similar to
conditions at an air show.

The more I play with this lens, the more I think it is the right one for me, down the road.

Here is one from a SBI National event this past July, the Super Stock class
shot with my 18-200, at 200mm. I really need the additional reach.

The pelican shots look oversharpened to me...
