Didn't read the whole press release, but 12 inks?!?! They could give the printer out for free and still make a fortune on ink sales.

That's pretty much what they do. The Printers are usually priced only a little higher than a new set of ink for the printer.

Listing at $999 they may not be losing too much on this one.

Would it work with my direct print button?

Does anybody know about the theoretical cost of these inks?

I work for Canon and sell the 12 color 60" wide format product. A set of inks for that device can cost in excess of $2000

about $35 a piece retail, so that's over $400 a set: http://www.usa.canon.com …_1#SuppliesAndAccessories (external link)

It says the tanks are 250% the size of normal tanks, and one would presume with more colors it needs less of each color to make a dot on the page.

$2000 sounds like a bunch, but you need BIG tanks to make a worthwhile number of 60" wide prints, so it isn't as bad as it sounds. Consider a 60" print might be $200+ at a lab and paying $2000 for a set of tanks that can make a few dozen of those is a good deal.
