The lens was officially released today, w00t!

http://lenses.zeiss.com …cts/slr/distagont225.html (external link)

High-speed perspectives

Through the special optical design and the targeted selection of optical glass, chromatic aberrations are virtually eliminated on the Distagon T* 2/25. The effective correction of distortion and field curvature is attributable to the inclusion of two aspheric lens surfaces. The floating elements design ensures high quality across the entire image field. The Distagon T* 2/25 is practically distortion-free.

With outstanding image quality even at maximum aperture, the Distagon T* 2/25 proves particularly advantageous in indoor photography without the use of a tripod – even in difficult lighting conditions. With this lens, you can take wide-angle shots which look natural and dynamic at the same time, thanks to the large angle of view. Whatever the application, this lens goes beyond the bounds of creativity.

I said it earlier when this was just a rumor, but I think this i just such a weird release for Zeiss. We already have an 18, 21, 28, and two 35's - I would have much rather seen the release of a 135 or 200, or even a re-make of the 18 with the same optics as the 21 than another lens in the 18-35 range.

But, I'm still excited to see the results from this lens. Julian - go pre-order one. :)

I'd like to see a Zeiss 10, 12 or 14, preferably with flat front elements.

Or a 16mm tilt-shift, again with a flat front element. You can never get wide enough!

Yeah, I'm a little intrigued since they already have the 2,8/25 - I have this lens myself (albeit in a ZM format). The differences between the two that I see, are:

- Faster f/2 aperture (vs. f/2.8)
- Aspherical element(s)
- Floating element(s)

So in theory, this new lens should be "better" at least on a technical level.

Yes, but not for close-up possibilities : minimum focus is at now 25cm instead of 17cm of the "old" 25 f/2.8.

Hmm, good catch there. That's a bit of a bummer.

They improve performance at closer distances - but reduce the closest distance you can focus at! Sneaky. :p

25mm is not the best macro focal length anyways. What I am excited about is this lens is supposed to have little to no field curvature, no distortion, sharp corner to corner etc. It also looks to be priced about the same as the 28mm f2. I am very likely to buy this!!

Actually, probably only if it takes filters. Are you listening Zeiss? :)

must be, I can't hear any crickets..lol. I think they will though (make it filter ready). It's not as wide as the 14mm stuff, and well.. Canon does it on the 16-35.. and it would just be crazy not too. (hope that works)

I don't really see the value of this lens.
