Any suggestions on how to actually do this? Our new kitten's name should be Dash. He is all over the place. It seems by the time he does calm down I never have the camera ready.

Give him something to occupy him long enough to get some shots, a cardboard box, large paper bag, a ball etc. and good luck.

Place some kitty toys on the bed or an elevated surface so you aren't on your knees. I also set the cat's bed on our bed during the day. I setup the camera with proper exposure and flash mounted and left it nearby. I like to bounce a flash off the ceiling. If I use the on-camera flash, it is used as fill-light only. I use manual exposure, set the exposure for the existing light and set flash exposure compensation to -1 stop.
Here are 2 taken with the flash bounced off the ceiling. 50D with 60mm lens.

1st one is Jake. Flash bounced off ceiling.
It is a little bit noisy because I used a high iso (800) and I missed exposure by underexposing about 1 1/3 stops so I had to brighten it up in pp.

2nd shot is Lucy. Used on camera flash. Manual exposure was set for existing light, with no flash exposure compensation.
Her paw moved during the shot and the flash stopped it partway thru the movement.
